In the spirit of the wolf vs. dog thread...

The classic North American wildnerness confrontation. The meanest, toughest grizzly bear vs. the meanest, toughest cougar(Puma, Mountain Lion, whatever).

My money's on the bear. The biggest cougar wouldn't weigh more than 200 pounds. A Grizzly would be at least 5 times that. One swipe from a grizzly's paw can break a man's leg, or knock his head off.

bear. cougars avoid conflicts a lot more than bears do, so the cougar would probably turn tail.
also, in simple weight calcs the bear wins hands down. Biting power should be approximately the same.

bear...although I don't think either one would be too inclinded to fight one another (mainly because they have no reason to)

Yeah, this is pretty one-sided. I should have made it a Siberian Tiger. Now that would be a good fight.

Well, we'll give them a reason. The cougar insulted the bear's mother.

Grizzly. Cougar are too tiny to be a threat to it.

They actually have a show like this on Discovery or Animal Planet. The one that I watched was a grizzly versus a tiger; the grizzly won by breaking the tiger's neck with a swipe of its massive paw. I would have to say the outcome would be similar in this situation (grizzly over cougar).

But tigers are endangered... how did they set up the fight and then be able to broadcast this on TV without getting in trouble?

Grizzly, paws down. The match-up is a tad skewed. I'd liken it to Evander Holyfield vs the current featherweight world champion.

Maybe a Grizzly vs a Kodiak or Polar Bear ... or even a full grown bull moose.

If the tiger lands a single bite on the bear's neck, its over.

But the Bear could simply scratch the stupid cat to death.

They use computers instead of real animals. Experts are involved for each animal, and they also make mechanical devices to replicate the strength of any given animal. Based upon assumptions and / or deductions, they model cpu images to "fight" each other.

No animals were harmed in making this post. :)

a swipe of the paw breaking the neck - the functional morphologist in me rolls on the floor laughing tears!

a tigers neck is extra strong - for holding struggling prey until it suffocates! Just watch how they kill alrge animals - rarely do they bite through the tough hide, unless they manage to reach the throat! Rather, they camp down on the snout of throat and suffocate the prey, or wait for it to get a heart attack (no joke, most gazelles and their close relatives die from a stroke or heart attack, not the bite!).

So breaking the tigers neck - not really!

Grizzly bears weigh 1000+ pounds. The cougar has no chance whatsoever. Siberian Tigers can weigh up to 800 pounds, I believe.

Do cougars hunt in packs or one by one?

I mean, if they hunt in cougar packs, it might be a question of intelligence. Just think about the velociraptor dinosaurs. They were extraordinary hunters and fighters, in spite of their small size. This was due to the intelligence and hunting tactics (combined attacks, diversions and all sorts of rather advanced maneuvres) of the raptors.
Now, if the cougars travel and hunt in packs, then I'm not so sure who would win - a pack of cougars versus a bear.

But in a fight between one cougar and one bear - I'd have to go with the bear as well.

actually im pretty sure grizzly weight alot less than 1000 pounds, and theyre much smaller than cougars, only theyre alot more known because theyre alot more aggressive and unpredictable

this is from the top of my head, i could be wrong, some one should look into it

edit:i was reading cougar but for some reason i was thinking kodiak bear  , my misstake

cougar vs grizzly, im not so sure the bear would have such a huge advantage really, but in most cases it would win, but it wouldnt win easy

wolves have been seen attacking bears

I gotta say the Grizz. But Cougars are more mobile, and could probably jump down from a tree or outcropping and onto the bears neck.

But in a cage match, the Grizz pwns.

Cougars don't hunt in packs. African lions do. The sim was done on discovery with a cougar vs a wolf and they made the point that a wolf would usually be in a pack. In a real conflict Cougars are faster and more agile then a Grizzly so it may have a chance because they would most likely use better tactics. Siberian Tigers which are much larger then Bengal Tigers would own the Grizzly or any other four legged carnivor. Its faster, longer, bigger, more agile, has bigger teeth, bigger claws, longer reach and more experience killing carnivores.

yeah siberian tiger, the nastiest creature that walks the land, they can get up to 4 meters long!

only animasl i can think of that would stand a chance are the rhino and the elefant

rhino im not too sure of btw
