Hey folks, just won my first Diety game on BtS and *Phew* what a tough one that was! Unfortunately Hall of Fame wasn't accepting submissions yet when I started but here are the settings:
Difficulty: Diety
Map: Huge, Terra.
Total Civs: 18
Speed: Marathon
Settings:No barbarians, Unrestricted Leaders, Lock Modified assets, Advanced Start 3000 Points. No Tech Brokering.
My civ: Portugal/Darius
I believe the only way to win a huge Diety game is with Portugal on a terra map as the AI simply spawns such massive amounts of troops, that you will never be able to cope.
Basic Strat:
A: Start on a map where you can build 1 city on a small island close to your capitol and make sure at least 2 out of max 3 cities have fish/clam etc, buy Sailing Tech with your points. This will give you 2Gold per trade route and allow you to research a lot faster (as you can then afford to have 3 or four cities early on.
Buy a Lighthouse in your Capitol. (its cheap). Research Masonry first and immediately start work on the Great Lighthouse, use all your workers to chop nearby forrests. 3000 points will buy U: 3 cities, sailing, 1 lighthouse, 1 worker (+maybe 1 or 2 fishing nets).
1)Build the Great Lighthouse
2)Research to Carack UU at top speed, don't research any side techs. AI generally does not go for Metal Casting, Machinery first, so you can trade those for all almost other techs you missed out on.
3)Pre-Build settlers and workers while you research your ships, when you have them sail over to new world immediately.
4)Ship over a few Explorers before anything else, you will gain approx 3-6 Techs from the huts on the New world. Usually one of them will give you Astronomy! (which is a B**ch to research!)
5)Establish a new city on the new continent that has a lot of food and production, Great Lighthouse will give you a profit on new cities after you get Astronomy from your huts. Build only a few cities at first, make sure trade routes bring you more cash than city maintenance (here is why an Organised Civ is required!)
6) Build a new Palace on the new continent, courthouse/Forbidden Palace your old capitol.
7) Once the new continent is established as your capitol, Settle all of it and send masses of workers to cottage spam it.
8) Research directly to Riflemen, AI will be hesitant to invade you (even though they will most likely have cavalry by then)
9) After Riflemen, research directly to "the Internet" Wonder and build it.
10) After the internet, continue to the "Space Elevator" and build it.
11) Build Labs in all your cities and a space race is nearly assured!
PITFALLS:
1) DON'T EVER SWITCH TO A STATE RELIGION! (Some AI will attack you for sure and your odds are not good, even if you hold them off, a war will slow you down too much. Just go 'free religion' once you are able...
2) Make sure you give in to most extortion requests from your neighbour(s). IF you have to go to war, make sure its not your direct neighbour, and bribe them to go to war with you using one of your Techs as payment (so dont trade too much with ur direct neighbours or you will have nothing to offer)
3) Spy Defence during spaceship build. One or more AI's will cease all research and pump all income into espionage against you, they will try to and succeed in destroying your spaceship parts, I would recommend at least 10 spies in each of your cities on the old continent, or get rid of those cities alltogether....
4) Diplomatic Victory, whoever built the UN will try for diplo victory at some point, most of the time they will get it too! Counter by a) Declaring war, UN votes will then always be 'city swaps' or 'make peace'. b) Save every turn and start a new session should a diplomatic victory vote come up. As long as you make minor changes in that last turn next time you load, the vote will often be of a different nature (not entirely kosher HoF wise...)
5) Keep an eye on AI culture levels, most likely one or 2 of them will go for cultural victory.
6)Do not start any late game wars without a massive amount of nukes stored, you will need them! AI will spawn unlimited Guided Missiles (and i DO mean unlimited) Any stack of units sent their way will be destroyed instantly. Triple Nuke all cities in the area before approaching and move swift (as next turn 20+ missiles will have been moved into it again, so capture the city before AI can use them the 2nd turn after nuking it.
GOOD LUCK GUYS!
