Perhaps it would be interesting to have non-100% stay afloat rate for ships other than trireme? Say 75% stay afloat probability for sails (you could "discover America" with them, but not base a dependable transport on them), 90% for frigates and say 98% for the rest (perhaps 99% for carriers).
Ships still do sink nowadays, quite regularly.

Thanks DarkPanda, always wanted to know this, I felt that sometimes when going straight or not too close to land it more often didn't sink, now I know it doesn't matter.. it is just 1 or 0
