This is my first venture in Comp Talk. I'm scared.... Basicly i have a Toshiba Satellite L450D laptop with 1GB of ram. And it is basicly my TV, DVD player and so on. I depend on it for uni work too. It works fine, but its a little slow. So i want to pump it full of steriods... I mean RAM....

Would this work?

Hi Kristopherb, welcome to the Computer Talk section. I'm not very good with hardware so I won't pretend to be an expert but did you ever think of calling Toshiba's tech support? If you look through your computer's documentation you should be able to find a free tech support number and they are probably the most qualified to answer your questions. Also a store like office depot might be able to help you. Then again the computer talk section here is pretty active with a number of people who know a lot more about computers than I do so if you wait a bit longer, I'm sure that someone else will be able to give you a proper answer and not a "look here" response. But if your in a hurry, you could look there.

Do you have 32-bit of 64-bit OS? WIth 32-bit anything above 4 GB is basically wasted.

Also whats your motherboard? Various programs can give you this... I recommend HWiNFO32 and export a short text report. It'll give you something like this:

Spoiler :
Computer: FOXCONN MCP61M05
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (Brisbane, BH-G2)
2200 MHz (11.00x200.0) @ 2210 MHz (11.00x200.9)
Motherboard: FOXCONN M61PMV
Chipset: nVidia nForce 6100-405/430
Memory: 4096 MBytes @ 315 MHz, 5.0-5-5-15
- 2048 MB PC5300 DDR2-SDRAM - Kingston 2G-UDIMM
- 2048 MB PC5300 DDR2-SDRAM - Kingston 2G-UDIMM
Graphics: XFX GeForce 8400 GS
nVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (G86), 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM
Drive: WDC WD5000AAKS-22A7B0, 488.4 GB, Serial ATA 3Gb/s
Drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH20NS15, DVD+R DL
Sound: nVIDIA MCP61 - High Definition Audio Controller
Network: NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Build 6002

Also your link is broken.

I got a timeout error (were you logged in?). You're gonna have to give me another link.

Heres one, its a 4GB as opposed to my bad 1 GB. Its got DDR2 ram, which I think what my laptop runs off. In the links i put up earlier they also said DDR2 RAM 800MHZ too.

(Toshiba Satellite L450D specs, second from top in google. i think its a website issue annoyingly)

The more i look into it the more i'm convinced its the right form of RAM, but i need confirmation.

DDR2 PC800 would indeed work in that laptop. The only question is which particular brands are compatible with the motherboard.

Sweet.... how would i find that out?

Can't go wrong with Kingston, and the shop guarantees it will run.
It does have a different part number than the one you mentioned, so standard SO-DIMMS will probably not work.

I suggest to get 2 of those if you have indeed a 64 bit Windows, and you can get the same part via amazon for half the price.

Edit: Maybe just another 1 GB module will be more cost effective, that Sempron will probably bog down anyway if you try heavy multitasking or anything else where 4 GB might give you a significant advantagte over 2 GB.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to buy a cheap one and try to install it. How hard can it be.

Its a laptop, so either virtually impossible for a novice, or as simple as unscrewing a panel on the back...

Good news...
(sorry the pope isn't dead) I've installed the RAM. now it works and runs a long smoothly. Now for the CIV test.
Thanks Everyone
