Have you ever missed TOE on upper levels?

Personally, I've never missed the Theory of Evolution wonder but I now know that it is VERY possible on Deity and even more so on Sid.

Have you?

I came very close to losing out on the TOE to the vikings. I think I beat them to it by ONE turn! The Ottomans started building it before either me or the vikings were building it but luckily I was at war with them using an army to trash their production tiles. Interesting thing is that the Ottomans stopped building it when my army was near the city that was building it. So I was safe from the Ottomans. The Vikings however were in a democracy, were at peace with every civ except 1, and were building it in a 55 sheild/turn city (with factory and coal plant). I had a prebuild for it a long time ago and had more than enough sheilds to complete TOE. I just needed the TECH and was 9 turns away from getting it when the vikings started building their 240 shield version of TOE!!! I thought I was doomed but luckily, they went into anarchy for two turns and THATS what barely saved my @$$!!!

If I had missed out on it, how likely do you think it would be that I lose? How likely is it to lose the game if you miss out on the TOE? They probably would have taken Hoover's too if that happened. What would you do if this nightmare came true for you? Would you quit the game or would you have built like 8 armies and pillage the guts out of every single civ except for yours? Because thats what I think I might have done! Switch production to military academy and build like 8 armies and go to town with those little trolls!

ToE is always finished before I even get into that age on Sid. does not matter, since they research so fast anyway and I expect to be far behind, until the end of the IA or even later some times.

I only care about getting the GLB, they can have the rest, until the modern age.
Can't let them build the UN, unless I am sure the civ has no friends and is not going to get any.

Really??? That sounds pretty bad! I've only tried playing Sid once as the Geeks and lets just say I found myself playing a new game back on deity level in less than 30 minutes. Makes me wonder, how could Sid level be fun at all when the AI has 40 free defensive units and 3 free settlers??? I like deity level, it is just the right difficulty setting. It is hard but doable given that you don't end up on an island with enough space for only 2 cities.

Actually they start 12 extra defenders and 6 extra attackers. Two extra settlers and 4 extra workers. I can't speak on deity all that well as once C3C came out I only played 1 or 2 deity games, since it was no longer the highest level.

The fun, well I am not sure it is fun, but the satisfaction for me comes, in digging out of a big hole. That at at times, I just like to see hundreds of units come at me and see how I can fare.

True it can get tedious having to hack away at so many units, once you go on the offense, but you always have a down side.

This is why I play in AW games, to get into a bit of rough going and face at least one or two spots, where you could go down in flames.
