Howdy, folks. This is my first post.

Someone gave me Civ3 as a gift a while back. I know it's an older game, but it's still new to me. So far I'm enjoying it and have come to appreciate how deep a game it is and how much there is to learn. I've been working my way through the War Academy articles and have improved enough to win a few games at Monarch and start the transition to Emperor.

I've gone through a few of the training games and, although I have found them instructive, I often get frustrated trying to follow the action. (A lot of the images and saved games are no longer accessible, so that doesn't help). I think it would help if I could participate in one of these and get more of a hands on experience. I'm wondering if there are some of you out there that still play training games, and if you'd be interested in doing some hand holding of someone who still has a lot of gaps in his knowledge and would like to improve. I'd want to move slowly and would likely have a lot of questions, so I'd need a group with some patience who are willing to explain the whys and hows.

I'm hoping there is still some interest in this, and I just want to add a big thanks to all those who have contributed articles and shared knowledge on this site. It's helped a lot.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen that, and it's just what I was looking for. Looks like there is a full crew already, however, so I'll have to wait for the next one. I will follow and play along, though. I'm not clear on what the role of a lurker is, as opposed to someone who is just reading along.

Welcome to the forums!:band: A lurker is someone who reads along, so there really is no distinction.

The III forums are still pretty active because the game is very good. Some people, like me, go back and forth between III and IV. Some don't care for IV and still like III. Most people still playing III or IV don't like V. Actually, in OT polls about favorite Civ games III usually is close to V which is something because III is much older.

A lurker is someone who is just reading along. Lurkers may or may not comment or play along themselves.

I'd recommend reading GOTM threads. Recent GOTMs don't have very helpful spoiler threads, but older ones do. If you are playing conquests, I'd particularly recommend the early COTMs because a lot of discussion went on due to the changed ruleset. The maps and starting saves are guaranteed to be available, even when people have deleted their images from their posts. SirPleb's write-ups are particularly nice, because he usually included a lot of information about his thought processes, instead of just when he did what.

You can also find helpful threads in the HOF forum, but they aren't as easy to pick out.

Welcome.

As the others have said a lot of players are dissatisfied with IV and V, or still enjoy III to go back to it sometimes. I personally think it's the best of the lot. Stick around, ask question, answer questions and keep learning. :)

Welcome, Freeven!

CKS has already explained what a lurker is. We've already got several, and I've never seen a TDG where anyone objected to questions from the Lurkers' Gallery. It is, after all, a Training Day Game!

I'd also add that occasionally, players in TDGs and other SGs drop out, or just go AWOL, and a replacement may be needed. If you want to be considered as a replacement, I'd suggest that you pop in on the thread and subscribe. Also, it's Lanzelot's game, so he'd be the one to decide if or when a sub is needed.

I know GOTM means game of the month. What does COTM mean?

I'll have a look around for those areas of the site and see what I can learn from them. Thanks.

I'll post on the thread and let them know I'm out here. In the meantime, I've downloaded the save and I'm playing through my own first 20 moves so I can compare to what others are doing.

Thanks, all, for making me feel welcome. It can be tough being a noob when everyone has been at it for so long. :)

We use 'G' and 'C' to differentiate between different versions of the game; there are two Games of the Month each month(ish), one played with Civ3 Play The World (GOTM) and one played with Civ3 Conquests (COTM).
