help island civ vs the contient

Disbanding unnecessary units in this case could be a good strategy considering you won't be getting into a conflict in a long time, this will help maximize GPT and let you buy more techs... good luck :)

Just to qualify that, this may not be the best idea if the unit has a long upgrade tree, especially the defenders, which is always the cornerstone of any strong civ.

Since you're in Republic getting your cities past size 6 should be a good way to get free unit support (assuming you're playing C3Conquests with the reworked Republic)

But yes, unless you're preparing to launch an attack, you probably won't need much of an offensive force at all so building too much now will only drain gpt. Just go all defensive until you can get iron and build some swords and med infs to attack later.

Does any find it ironic that paulfish is playing Japan? ;)

The best bet is to keep the AI at war with each other. all that coastline should be getting you lots of gold. Buy them off. Also, you have two luxuries to pawn. It may be benificial to give away both.

Your military will stink until Rifleman. I suggest building only spearman and upgrading them once you get Nationalism. After all, by the time ships are advanced enough to cross the ocean safely, you will almost be there.

if you don't already, as soon as you have ships that can travel to the continent ship off a settler and garison unit and find a spot where the culture of another city doesn't cover it and build a city. make a temple and library the frist 2 things. this will push out your culture from that city and give you a place to land troops and other settlers
if you're lucky your culture will cause other cities to join you

By looking at the corner of the map I can determine the Maya are in the Middle Ages (I think!) That's not too far off. Trade with the AIs and do whatever is needed to keep up in techs. Start wars to slow them down (I'd also try sending some boats with a few troops there. They'll probably sink but you never know. IIRC you get a rep hit if you never attack during your alliance) in the tech rate and drain their treasury. Once Magnetism comes build Galleons and attack. If all else fails, try Diplomatic. Good luck!

This reminds me of a start I had in vanilla Civ3. I was on a frozen island in the north that was only large enough to support about 4 cities (I'm assuming...I couldn't build settlers), and there were no game, no fish, no whales, no wine in the forest.

Needless to say, waiting for my capital to get a harbor with MM with only one 2 sized city to do research was NOT going to happen. I would have discovered MM and probably found the AI in the modern age!

Get Astronomy or the Lighthouse as quickly as possible and use a ship chain to land units on the continent. Yes it's an exploit, but I wouldn't feel bad doing it under the circumstances. Trebuchets plus longbows should give you at least a fighting chance. Try to conquer a civ that's already getting beaten up by somebody else, especially one that lacks iron and saltpeter. Build the FP on one of the newly captured cities if you get a GL, or else build the FP on your island and do a palace jump to the mainland if your new cities are better than your old ones. You might also want to revolt to Monarchy since I doubt you're getting much unit support from your cities as Republic.
