The first noticeable change from Civ II to Civ III is the incredibly slow research rate. Playing at the chieftan level, I don't get gunpowder technology until around the 1200's AD where I was able to obtain such technology well before AD started in Civ II.

For the experts out there, give me some tips about how to boost my research rate.

Hmmm... I'm a newbie too, but I'll try to help, in whatever small way I can :)

If you're falling behind or running fairly even in tech, trade. Doesn't work on lower difficulty though.

Lots of cities with sciense improvements obviously helps :)

Commercial civs seem to have a way easier time at research, I'm currently playing as French (commercial + industrial) and I got railroads by 1300AD, entered modern times at 1600AD (though I got very lucky on the rolls, even got a city with iron works, a goddamn monster, 100+ shields a turn)

WLTK (We Love The King day) also seems to help a bunch, in this game I managed to get *all* the luxuries (5 in my own territory, 1 I warred for, and 2 I'm trading for), so my citizens are all happy and WLTK'ing me constantly and that helps BUNCHES it seems - I have a trading outpost city across a huge map, with WLTK it only has about 40% corruption, instead of 95%+ I was expecting.
