Help, modding and crashing

Hello,

I've been modding (and modding mods) in Civ 3 almost more than I'm playing. However, I have a problem that keeps recurring. Sometimes, after tweaking, when I start a new game with the civ3mod.bic, the game dies after the first turn is completed, but before I get a report back from the science advisor.

I've played around quite a bit with this problem in the last day or so and it SEEMS to be connected to the colors that are chosen for each civ, but not in a fashion I understand. I do know that if I choose Germany to have that sort of "feldgrau" color that that definitely causes this problem.

Thing is, sometimes (like floppy drives way back when) Civ 3 seems to become "stuck" and keep giving that error, even when a change is made or when a fresh, known good mod.bic is used.

I'd really like to know what's going on and why. Especially as I took the mod by Ancient and added a number of things to it to suit my tastes before finding out that it would crash.

This laborious mod-test-mod-crash-load-test-crash-load-test-mod process is getting old.

Its actually very simple. Civ3 crash when you use anything other than the first 16 color for a Civ. Even if you have more than 16 Civ, the newly added ones must also be allocated with one of the first 16 color (but the game will change the default color for that Civ if two of the random Civ have the same color).

So, happy modding and Happy New Year

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense, I guess, though why they wouldn't allow ANY of those colors or, conversely, leave out colors that cause a crash is beyond me.

Well, I've found it's not just about color. I also get these crashes from doing other things. For example, something I did to modify units is not making the game happy. Is there ANY central location or explanation of what values are appropriate for which types of units?

As an example, I've given the Bliz ability to modern naval units, but I don't know if THAT is why the game is unhappy. It could also be because I've given some naval units a zone of control. Or, it could be both. Nothing in the help files tells you this.

In another case, something I do to change a couple of wonders barfs the game as well.
