I checked the min and recommended specs before purchase and thought my pc would be ok to run civ5 - but its so slow and jerky its basically unplayable.

Have i misunderstood the specs?

Dell studio 540 Desktop PC ( ~ 2 yrs old)
Intel Core TM2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2,33ghz
4GB Ram
Geforce 9400 GT (latest drivers)
21 inch Samsung TFt monitor 1920 X 1080
Vista Home premium SP2

I have set every graphic setting to Low, the resolution to 1280 x 768, turned off ant alias, vsync and high detail strat and it still lags horrilby when the view tries to move between units on the map whose turn to act is next!

So is my pc just too old?

what res/detail level should i be able to play with this machine?

game purchased via steam, version of Civ5 is 1.01.332

thanks in advance guys for any help

Welcome to CFC :).

Sadly these hardware numbers are not easy to read, and your graphics card is below the minimum requirements .
If you take a look at this chart, you'll see your graphics card there listed, the 9400 GT.
And if you look now 5 categories higher, you will find the 7900 GS, which is listed as minimum requirement -> your card is too weak :(.

I have the Go7600 (in the same slot), and I do not have problems with jerkiness. The problem I have is a lot of grey until the video refreshes, and crashing. Do you have any programs running in the background? Also, you may want to make sure there are not any corrupted files. I have a 1.6 Duo core and only 2 megs, but I am still on XP. You might try re-downloading the video driver again and re-installing it. Or even redoing the service pack, or viruses?
