Hello everyone,

I have what I consider to be a big time problem... I am about halfway through a good game. I control about 25% of the territory, and am outplaying the AI. I just researched steam power, but no coal appeared anywhere. Not in my territory, and not in the other civs. I can see the whole map through exploration and map trading, and there is no coal to be found. I've probably played for about 40 turns since steams, and have researched 5 other techs or so, but still no coal, and it is killing me.. Did the game forget to put it on the map, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Joe

Hit control-shift-M, this will clear all the terrain improvements to make coal easier to see. Coal is pretty hard to see. It's black and looks like 3 little rocks. I thought I heard of one map where there wasn't oil anywhere, this could be the one of those very rare cases.

First thing you have to do is Edit up the absurdly low Firaxis values, especially for iron and coal - I'd estimate 175 and 178 are realistic.

Next thing you have to do is go to a graphics forum and download new art files to replace the nonsense Firaxis gave us so you can actually easily see resources. All my luxury resources have little smilies, and all the strategic resources have a small white dot with a letter inside - 'c' for coal, for instance. They are all easy to spot now.

Thanks guys,

You were absolutely right about not seeing them... Turns out there are only 4, and they are of course right in the middle of the most powerful civilization other than me. I was also fooled because they didn't have it under their box to trade - but I guess they can't trade it if they don't have the technology yet. Getting to the coal is going to be REALLY tricky.

Doesn't it seem wierd that there are only 4 coal squares? There is FAR more iron in the game - maybe even 6 times that. I spent 15 minutes looking over the map and still missed it until I took your advice and cleaned it up...

Can you please explain a little more about editing the "values" for iron and coal?? I am not sure how to do this..

Joe

In the editor there are appearance rate setting for each resource. A higher number means that the map will normally be made with more resources of that type. If you, like Zouave, think you'll have a better game by increasing the number of resources, then try this.

Personally, I find that one of the most interesting aspects of civ is the battle for resources - as in your example, where you'll have to concuer a good part of your rival to get it for yourself (unless you go for the peaceful road, of selling it the steam power tech, and then get coal by trade).

Explain this peaceful road to winning thing to me...

Your suggestion is a step in the right direction.

However, sometimes even a value of 300 would not be enough. This is a per civ number. If I want to play 4 civs on a 256X256 map the editor will not allow a number bigger than 300. If they want to make it per civ, at least let me enter a number like 1000.

The resources should be per tile, not per civ. Resources do not magically increase on a planet because there are 16 countries instead of 4.

Thanks for all of the prompt attention guys, my game is back on track!

Also, I just thought of something: Bridge building. For all I know this may already be in the game somewhere but why not add the ability for the workers to build an overwater bridge between land masses that are, say, 4 or less squares apart? It could be an ability found after researching construction or such....

Whatcha think?
