Every time I get close to winning and enter a space race it crashes. It seems to do it when a rival civilization is working on a space ship as well. Has anyone experienced this?

Do you have the adviser offering suggestions as to what to build in each city? If so, turn "instant advice" off and see if it helps. That's the only problem I've had late in the game; the adviser runs out of suggestions to build things and the game crashes.

Thank you! I'll try that. I think I do have that option on. It crashes every other turn :(

I have the same issue with the advice causing the game to hang.

The advice screen on the left shows up, then that's it. I haven't even gotten close to getting space ship, but then again maybe I'm just slow. It seems that last time I quit playing it was around 1500 AD which is at about the same time as I am now.

It can't be that the advisers ran out of ideas, the one town only has three buildings.

This is very frustrating, as I'm not very good at picking my own city improvements. I use the advisers as a bit of a crutch.

I suppose you are an inexperienced player. Keep playing and you'll find that the advisors rarely give you good advices. They are not that wise. When in doubt about what to build you can look for information from other sources, like this forum.

I would risk saying that if you are in doubt about what to build, maybe it is because you don't need to build anything that much. If this is the case, the best way to use your production resources (symbolised in the game by shields) is to build a diplomat or a caravan, because these units don't require food or shields for maintenance and they can be very useful later on. Before building an improvement, always think carefully if it is really necessary, since many of them take a long time to build and they need maintenance every turn. Of course you can always sell them but that would have been a waste of time and resources.

In my first games, I remember I used to build lots of improvements, as if I needed to build them all. Obviously I was always in dire straits. Nowadays, I play most of my games with very few improvements until later in the game. Just a couple of barracks and temples are all you need for a very long time.

I agree with your post very much but would like to add buildings such as Granary and Marketplace/Bank/University in at least the huge cities. If you play only build Chariot run over your enemies you need only the 2 you mentioned

If you use granaries at the beginning you'll have troubles keeping temples and colusseums up to the cities as they grow. Not that you shouldn't use them selectively.

Later in the game, you can have presidents day sales to get your population up. For example: you get a wonder that gives happy people in every city. Increase your luxuries rate until there are plenty of happy people in your cities and they will have a "we love the president" day. Their population will increase each turn until you return the happiness to normal.

This thread has drifted from it’s original purpose. Crashes and the like seem to happen at the extremes. It would perhaps provide more insight if one would post the MAP & SVE file and indicate what version of CIV was being run when the problem occurred.

pat90230 describes a long known bug with Instant Advice, which was Microprose's impetus to release five patch levels.

clh's problem is vague. Without further information I'd suspect a corrupted game copy.
