Help With Diplomacy

How do I make contact with the Civs that are not on the Foreign Advisor Screen? Is there any way to replace the portrait of a deceased civ (ie. a blank space) with that of one of the remaining civs that are not on the foreign advisor's screen?

If you're playing against more than six or seven civs, you can swap in other leaders by shift-right-clicking on one of the portraits. I think.
