I have downloaded Cedric Greene's programme to convert my version of CIV 2 to MGE so that I can play downloaded scenarios from this site. I have also downloaded the A World At War scenario and its associated patches.

Now when I try to run CIV 2 I get the following message:

SMEDS Application Error

Error: ERR_RESOURCENOTFOUND

File: ..\SOURCE\SMEDS\PORT.CPP

Stack trace :

I close this message then get choice of English or Francais as before (with different background). I click on OK and then get the above error message again. I close the message and the usual Microprose start up screen appears. Clicking on the mouse to continue brings up this message:

[Inactive C:\MPS\CIV2\CIV2.EXE]

Error "CivKeyNotFound (Bad RULES_TXT)" in module "<Startup>"

data : 89 0 'Future Technology , 1, 0, X7, X6, 3, 3 ; ... '

Most recent DOSerror: 0

I then close this screen and the programme stops running and CIV2 does not load. Please can someone help me to overcome this problem.

P.S. I have Windows ME and have extracted all the downloaded files to C:\MPS\Civ2 as instructed. All the files are in that folder along with the original CIV2 files. Is there anything further I need to do to compltete the conversion?

I'm not a specialist in scenarios, but it looks like to me "A world at war" is looking for other files.

Thanks Titi, that might explain it. I did wonder if maybe I had missed one of the files when unzipping them. But I think this error ocurred before installing AWAW. Anyway, for now, I just reinstalled CIV 2. I might try downloading Cedric Greene's upgrade again. Before I do, Is there any advice I can follow that would help next time? In particular, how do I actually "back up" my installation of CIV 2 before attempting to install the MGE upgrade. Sorry if the answer is obvious but I am not that familiar with file management! Please could someone spell it out for me. Thanks.

Actually, I think the easiest solution would be to install CIV2 twice. On the second time, choose (for example...) "Civ 2 MGE" as the installation folder, and that's where you'll upgrade Civ 2 to MGE thanks to Cedric's upgrade.
That way, you'll still have the standard Civ 2, and the multiplayer edition as well!
