Hidden specials

"Hidden" specials are resources that are "hidden" by a Grassland square. You uncover them by transforming or reforesting the square they are on.

You may not be able to tell by looks alone, but the specials and huts are organized in a certain pattern. I've found an old post about the pattern, but I can't provide a link, although someone like the Duke of Marlborough or Smash might be able to.

Anyone can create a hyperlink.See FAQ and also note the buttons above the text area when posting a reply. You can have links, images, bold etc with just a button click

Go into the Civ2 Map Editor and look at the basic pattern of the Whales and Fish on the blank map. Then draw a large island of all plains over the water. Whenever you cover a Whale you will get a Wheat; whenever you cover a Fish you will get a Buffalo. Now cover some of those Wheats or Buffaloes with Grass. Grass "hides" the special underneath. You can "activate" them by Mining the Grass into Forest. If you want the Plains version you can then Irrigate the Forest into Plains. With Engineers you can Transform the Grass into Hills.

There is a regular pattern of specials that depends only on the "Resource Seed". This Seed also sets the Hut pattern too. If you create a city you can get a maximum of 4 specials in the 4 furthest corners of your city radius. Some locations dont have all 4 specials; check the patterns of specials and huts visible to confirm.

There is a utility program called HutFinder that can show you the locations and patterns of huts and specials given just one location of a hut. Its only weakness is that there is two possible sets of specials for each hut location, so the patterns will be correct but the type (Whale or Fish) may be off.

As this is a new one on me,can someone confirm:

I have a city with three specials, each a 'knight's move' from my city square. The fourth corner of the city radius is a grassland square. I can (should) have a set/eng MINE that square to try to creatre a special.

Does it matter whether it is a shielded grassland square?

It depends on where the city is in the pattern, but if you are in a probable 4 special spot you should mine or transform it. Whether a grassland is shielded or not shouldn't have anything to do with the specials. However, there's a pattern for shielded squares as well, although a lot more obvious. Draw a large island of grassland in the mapeditor and it'll become obvious.

Hoorah for the Hutfinder! Just use it, and you can activate hidden specials by mining/transforming grassland squares that should have a special on them.
