History Of Rome: A RTOR2 Tale

Great read. Seems Rome has had some pretty tough times since it's first war with the Zulu. Eagerly awaiting the new chapter.

Chapter 17: End of an Era, Octavian's Opening

The situation in Egypt grew dire when the main Egyptian field command was killed off by the explosion of a well placed gunpowder deposit. A massive Ethiopian invasion then threatened to capture the capital of Thebes. The threat of a collapsing Egypt prompted swift debate in the halls of the Senate. Rome had already began a potential slippery slope when it initiated shipments of war material to the UK in 574, but the war between the Vikings and Russians had been declared over only months later. In China the Andean expedition had been forced to retreat and the Indians plunged farther than ever before. Even a late Arab invasion of Zululand appeared to be too little too late.

As the election of 580 neared the Roman Trade and Security Party was deadlocked in internal struggles. Lines were drawn to supporters of intervening on Egypt's behalf, dubbed Militants, and the proponents of continued neutrality and unrestricted trade with all, dubbed Commercials. Seeing an opening in the volatile world of Roman politics the richest man in Rome - Octavian Caesar - cast his hat into the ring. Octavian, decedent of the great Julius, was born for the world of business not war (surely a symbol of the changed role of Rome in the world). By 20 Octavian had inherited the already lucrative Sicilian Shipping Company. In nearly no time at all Octavian's natural skills and cutthroat practices earned him a 30% control of all private maritime activity going to and from Roman ports (which was an incredible amount after the opening of the Suez and Panama Canals in the 570s). One again the city of Syracuse could be declared the maritime capital of Rome, rivaling that of Carthage. With millions of denarii at hand Octavian resurrected the dead Empirelist Party. He attracted to his party, either by promises of fame, fortune, power, or through pure charisma and ideology dozens of top politicians, businessmen, patricians, and even generals. Running on a platform of "restoring former Roman glory" the Empirelists grew popular support from the massive amounts of disillusioned Roman citizens who had grown apathetic towards the Senate as evident in the 570 election. When the election of 580 was said and done the Empirelists had gained a plurality of 40 seats. The RTS had split by this point between Militants (25 seats) and Commercials (30 seats) with the Pax Romana picking up the final 30. Not wanting to see this upstart from Sicily redirect proper Roman control, many Militants sided with Pax Romana to elect a Commercial Emperor to rule. Octavian was relegated to become the Governor of Sicily, his ambitions for the seat of Emperor would have to wait.

The Commercial Emperor continued the policy of non-intervention in World War Four, but sides had been drawn when humanitarian aid and promise of asylum for refugees was promised to Egypt and Egypt alone. Rome's continued inaction had weighed heavily on the minds of the United Kingdom which decided to sever diplomatic ties and began deportations of Romans living in their land after an election which put Conservative Lord Walter Scott in power. The Vikings then committed the same policy against the French, who unlike the Romans responded aggressively. Allying themselves with the Russians the French began secretly supplying an Irish rebellion led by Issac McCarth. The Irish fought hard and expelled the Vikings from their island. Perhaps inspired, but more likely driven to it by the French, the Portuguese also revolted against the rule of the NEC (the UK's ally). The Andes Confederation did little to stop their colony from also becoming part of this new nation. In response to French claims of a planned invasion of Russia by the UK, and to support the new Irish nation, Russia launched an invasion of Scandinavia. The New England Confederacy responded by occupying most of Russian Alaska.

In events around the world, Egypt continued to lose ground to the Ethiopians who by 590 were laying siege to Thebes. The Arab invasion of Zululand was smashed while Aboriginee and NHC advances slow. The United States of Northern Asia signed peace with China in return for China creating a new nation - Korea - which was o be allied to the USNA. Russia too signed peace with China for some land, freeing up Russia for its Scandinavian invasion. The USNA and Korea would declare war on the United Kingdoms to aid their Russian allies. India refused peace, and continued to push east against the battered Chinese forces, their army in Malaysia finally linking with the main northern force. Zululand would surprise the world with a massive suicide attack using its concealed fleets. The ships sailed out with skeleton crews and crashed into various allied ports, exploding with great damage. The actions weakened the logistical capabilities supporting the invasions of Zululand as well as disrupting trade for a short period.

[I wasn't expecting to write so much about 2 updates, but World War Four is really confusing, with no real alliance system between the two fighting sides, and I figured you'd want to know whats going on in the world now instead of just passing details like my earlier works]
