Is there a way to get Civ II to keep a game log of important events like cities being founded, wonders being built, major tech advances, spaceships launched or landing, cities being captured in war, etc? Or is there a patch that does it?

That's something that might be fun--being able to go back at the end of the game and see everything.

No - but if you win by conquest the victory screen will review the years you conquered each civ. I like to keep a small NotePad window open as I play to record things, especially to track my beakers accumulated. Sometimes I wonder "now when did the Aztecs start the Hanging Gardens?" so I can decide when they are likely to be nearing finishing.

Civ1 does a crude version of what Bestbank Tiger suggests. It only shows where every civ started and how they grew or shrank. It is one of the most enjoyable things to watch at the end of a long game. It is a pity that Civ2 did away with that.

The Civ1 replay also shows who built the first of every unit, the diplomactic relationships and how they changed, when each wonder was built and a number of other pieces of mostly useless but pretty cool infomation. Also, in Civ1, you can let the game spit out a TXT file in which all this is written out plus a map of the world (in ASCII!).
