I'm surprise with this Great Wonder (GW):
HOLLYWOOD.

But I can't see it as a GW.
A small wonder maybe!

Why?

Lock, in India there is Bollywood. in the US Hollywood. In Europe n locations and big places with create movies and others XF - Especial Effects...

So why is a GW???

I can't understand that!!!!

Someone???

It's a cultural symbol.

When people think of movies, generally they'll think about Hollywood.

There is only one Hollywood. When people think of "where are movies made" they immediately think of Hollywood even though they are made in many places.

People don't think of Great Library when they read books, but it's still a wonder. :)

I'm a fan of Bollywood, but isn't it a stretch to suggest that it had the same global cultural influence/revenue stream as Hollywood? I mean, if that were the case, wouldn't the Indian movie industry have a name that wasn't a play on the name of a town in California?

I believe the Hollywood wonder generates a new luxury item, Hollywood movies (hopefully, there are enough luxury units to trade to every nation, since movies are non-rivalrous goods). Given the extent to which Hollywood's foreign earnings vastly outstrip the rest of the world's foreign earnings put together, I don't think Firaxis was absurd to decide that Hollywood was a Great Wonder.

I don't think we should worry about what Civ4 will contain... We can 'rebuild' the whole game from scratch and suit all our needs. Thats my oppinion bcz civ4 needs many addings and takeaways!

IMO Hollywood for itself would be o.k - but Hollywood + Broadwaymusicals + Rock'n Roll ? That are IMO to much "modern Entertainmentwonders" I would be carefull with modern wonders in generell - because who knows if they are still remembered in 500 years ?

@ Karam Rebuild - o.k. - but I think rebuilding is more difficult with wonders because of the movies ...

Well, if you're going to "rebuild the whole game from scratch" why even wait until it comes out to start?

It's an American game made. What can you say?

Those silly Egyptians, cramming their Pyramids down our throats as a great wonder... I mean, sure, they are big, and I am sure they are great if you are Egyptian, but come on.

Hollywood is a great Wonder to have. Lighting the night- illuminating a bare screen with glowing colors ,movement and characters and story-
Old Wonders like the Pyramids- built with slave labor- just sit there in a big stupid bulk-
serving the vanity of a "pharoah" so dillusional they thought themselves "divine" and actually had people believe it. Glad i am an american. We never had that idea of royality that other nations seem to still like. :scan:

Look at it this way, in Civ3 you had Shakespeare's Theatre. It's the same thing if you think about it, though.

Other coutries have their film industries, but Hollywood set the example and the standard for blockbuster $100million + films. Many countries take inspiration from Hollywood, which just reinforces its prominence.

And in spite of Hollywood's reputation for trashiness, they (by which I mean the movie companies) have put out some real gold. It's not much, but it exists. And it's the only real way by which Civ can represent the most recent medium which has some degree of consideration as art.

How do I know? Well, if you put it that way-I'm going to make them do it-that's what families are for. Besides Niel Young said rock and roll would never die. Niel don't lie. Actually there's quite abit of music and art etc. from the 1500's thats still around and older stuff too. As for no slaves on the e pyramid job somehow I doubt it. But I would like to be a meanwhile historian when I grow up. :crazyeye:
