Hope to be SMAX addicted

Hey folks
Just loaded SMAX back into computer after several years of dust. I have tried playing it here and there but never had the time or patience to learn the game.
This most recent bout though has been a little different and just want the addiction to kick in!
I just wanted peoples initial impressions of the game and when it really grabbed you and hung on.
I want to fully manage my empire and not automate anything but feel that micromanagement may be too much. Any help there would be appreciated.
Also I need help in reading Tech Poster that came with game?

SMACX is quite a complex game far beyond that of civ3 though if you know what your doing transcend difficulty isn't too hard. Always micromanage formers it's not that much more effort but the benefits are massive. I don't use governers either perhaps they are good for beginners but I think its better to learn the micro easily. Probably the hardest thing to get a grasp of is terraforming on land (sea terraforming is more limitied and easier so pirates could be a good learner faction). With patience you will learn what sort of land will produce how many resources after terraforming. Don't forget planting trees in combo with treefarm and hybrid forest base facilities they are very powerful.

Most importantly refer to datalinks F1 regularly as necessary. Even pros probably do this to check tech tree. It'll tell you mostly everything quickly without having to read the manual.
