How about voting for the best ideas?

I think the moderators could hold an election among people that post in this forum to decide the top 10 or top 20 best ideas/changes that should be included in CIV4.

Like: each people could choose from a previously prepared list, the 10 or 20 changes that should be included in CIV4. Than the votes for each idea/sugestion would be counted and the top 10 or 20 would be obtained....

In this way everybody, CIV4 makers included could have a closer idea of what needs to be changed with more urgency...

Or maybe not...I'm only a Chieftain... :)

this is actually a good idea, the only probelem is there are too many ideas to include ona simple list of 20, that's why i would encourage everyone to use the "Rate Thread button on the top right hand corner of the first post to rank every idea they see, i believe we only need 2-5 people or more for the rating to actually show up, so don't be discouraged if the rating doesn't appear until later

Ybbor, I think you need to encourage louder. There are no rated non-sticky threads on the first page...

well, exactly due to the fact that there are thousands of ideas, the moderators could themselves select only a few...hmmm...dozens and create a list, from which the civers would select their favourites to create the top 10 or top 20...like they do with the Oscars and the Golden Globes: the Royal Academy of Arts (or whatever) chooses a list of movies, actors, etc. (nominees) and from that list of nominees the winners will be chosen...

in this case, the moderators would choose the nominees and the rest of the civers would choose the winners...

Why don't we just choose the ones from Ybbor's thread?

EDIT: The bold ones, I mean.

I don't know that I'd want to play games with features chosen or influenced by polls and popularity contests.

If Firaxis is paying attention, they can identify good ideas. If they are not paying attention, polls aren't likely to draw their attention. Or so I would think. :)

I remember doing a large poll for what concept needed to be expanded or added in Civ 4. It was very general and not biased towards anyone specific idea. It's probably in the archives by now.

Voting on individual ideas are kind of useless. Some ideas are supported generally by many, but the thread-owner's details or version of it alienate most people. Some ideas are really vague, but are supported by many. Some ideas are very small and while great, only inspire small men. Some ideas are huge and brilliant, but would never ever get implemented into Civ. And ideas that add more are generally more moving than ideas that take something away or simplify it.

The poll wouldn't be that representative, unless you could find a way to even out the content.

I think this would be a bad idea. I wouldn't want to play a consensus game. If I were Firaxis, I wouldn't want to build a consensus game.

No way! I got the same reasons as dh_epic the poll wouldn't truly reflect the thoughts of civers. and Firaxis won't use it anyway.

well this wouldn't be a presidential election and the intention of this poll wouldn't be to "help" Firaxis developing the game...I'm just a fan of CIV that would like to see some improvements and although most civers are not experts in game programming and designing, they are the ones to whom the game is made for...maybe some of us are curious to know if their ideas are the same ideas than other fans and that would be the major aim of the poll...

And I wouldn't like if someone from Firaxis said that they just don't care about our ideas just because we are simple players...that would be pure arrogance...CIV is for civers...

We aren't really the Civers though. We're the most hardcore of the hardcore who have a certain vision about how the game should be played and what we think would be fun or interesting.

The average player doesn't even so much as visit the official Civilization website, let alone fansites like this. There's just too many sources of error for the poll to be worth a damn:

- the choices in the poll wouldn't reflect the ideas in the community
- a poll on individual ideas wouldn't reflect the true interests of the community
- the community's interests wouldn't reflect the interests of the larger civ playing audience
- the current civ playing audience wouldn't reflect the interests of the target audience for Civ 4 (which is said to be slightly different)
- the interests of the target Civ 4 audience don't necessarily make for a good game

It's kind of fruitless.

gee, dh_epic if that's what's you think about a modest query on a game, you really must hate the electoral system of USA :)

For a 'hardcore' there are precious few these days who seem to have played any of the games before CIV3!

The players who were around in the CIV1 days and still play fanatically - THEY are the hardcore!

:D

Hahahaha, don't even get me started on the electoral system of the USA ;)
