How are archeological sites generated?

Is the number of sites constant in any given map size? I always play with ancient ruins turned off, but I might change my mind if that means more archeological sites later.

I think number of sites is constant and proportional to the number of civs. More civs = more sites.

you could make landmarks when the archeaological sites are within city radius.

Whats wrong with it being right next to ur capital? That is where I would want it because your capital probably has the greatest bonuses for culture tiles. It is usually bad to make an Artifact with a Site within working range because it gives a lot more culture when worked and possibly more tourism.
Yeah, I would rather have them not spawn right next to the capital due to great person improvements. I'd rather be using those precious improvements rather than having it destroyed and possibly not even get good culture from it, so hopefully Firaxis can give you an option to replace the improvements or dig under it.

I once started a game in the information era, and sure enough there were antiquity sites where "such and such happened in the ancient era" from turn 0 :crazyeye:

I've seen too many ruins that just didn't make sense. Worst was a city states razing a city statethat that wasn't in the game.

That makes sense. What wouldn't make sense is finding the ruins of Budapest razed by Sofia with Budapest being 50 tiles away. The CS is not in the game anymore, because the other CS razed it.

The CS was never in the game as the # of CS was at default level for the map.

There should be ways to generate antiquity sites through both war and peace, and there are. I don't think they should generate the same number of sites in every Civ's territory (and I have no reason to believe they do) but there should be some amount of equity of war vs peace when it comes to site generation.

I find it tends to come out very close to even most of the time, because some stupid majority of the sites are beads from the ancient era from a plundered ancient ruin.

I know there needs to be a balance struck so that not all the ruins are in Attila's and Shaka's houses, but it's got to be possible to do better than the current state.

the best is when you have a barb camp right where you want to build a base, on the perfect tile. clear that in the ancient area and you may have over 10 culture generating from that tile if you go that route. its actually made a difference late game, and helped me squeak by a diplomatic win recently. if its a forest tile, a 1/1 for example, I just leave it empty and wait. don't make the mistake of planting an academy on top of a former camp
