At what point do people cease to be considered newbies? I don't particularly want to join a 'no noobs' game if their definition of a new player is one who has never won on Emporer in single player mode.

It depends, but never won at emperor is a bad attestation.

From my experience in MP, people call noobs everyone that they don't know.

Beat them few times and they start to recognize you. It's not that slow process of quitting the noob's crowd if you are not noob really.

Yes don't use SP benchmarks, they are meaningless to MP players and that would likely be the worse thing you could do on your first trip to the lobby is state how you can skool the AI on X level!

That alone will get you called a noob :P Like MN has said the road to respect in the MP community is on the field of battle, kick some butt and you will shortly be on the invite list for team games and no longer a noob....

SP and MP are different animals, so I agree with CS that SP benchmarks may not be the best tell for you, but really, I just wanted to encourage you not to worry about it. "noob" is different to everyone and it gets thrown around alot. No matter what you do, someone sometime will call you a noob, even if you're cleaning them up. If you don't quit on a whim and play within the best interests of your team the best you know how, you'll be quite ahead of lots of general lobby players IMO. The worst the water can be is cold - jump on in. GL!

Lol if thats their definition of a newbie than they are noobs themselves.

Do not play any more singleplayer after you can beat noble comfortably, unless you have no internet connection. Learn the way of the online Civ-player. Experience experience experience and learn and adopt.

a newbie (someone new to something) is different than a noob (a newbie unwilling/unable to learn / cussword for inferior players), btw.

And if I may define newbie/average/good/experts lines :)

newbie: Someone who does not know basic game mechanics yet.
average: someone who's play is not counterproductive, but does not know how to properly attack or defend or build a good civ.
good: someone who knows what makes a good civ and when to attack/defend. Knows what to do and what not to do.
experts: someone who, using much experience and ingenuity, combines tricks in build-up and military to outclass good players.
