How can there be a BTS patch?

It'll probably come with 3.00 since the CDs for BTS were most likely written and boxed up months before the release in order to meet up with the demand for the game. You'll have to download and install the patch as soon as you have BTS.

See, the patch corrects flaws found after BtS went gold - this is why it came so quick.

I bet they sent the thing off and then realized too late "OH NO WE DIDN'T FIX A BUG!"

I don't get it. They test the game, ship it out, and create a patch with a ton of fixes a few days later. I mean c'mon, what's up with that? It makes no sense...

A design team, no matter how large, no matter how many dedicated testers and no matter the resources they have, cannot possibly expect to match the testing capacity of 100,000 customers.

It's actually a positive when a company is quick to respond to flaws like this. What's more - the flaws weren't in any way game stopping.

Yep. Probably were celebrating sending off the final release with an epic game of Civ and what do you know, a major bug turns up. Then it's back to programming.

No, someone who bought it where it's already been released probably ran into it. Like Spearthrower said, a huge playing base will find bugs much more quickly than a small programming team.

And now all we need is a patch for the ability for the spy to make 24 mad faces or 24 sick faces in one turn and turn a capital city into nothing. Or a good modder.

I was being sarcastic. People said they have tried the new game on Marathon (the best game length option) and one spy can, in one turn, create 24 anger faces or 24 sick faces. And that needs to be changed. And I dunno what XML is.

A few days ago, when I loaded Civ4 and Warlords on my new computer, I checked for updates, was told one existed, and downloaded and installed it. A few hours ago, having seen "new patch" mentioned, I checked again, found that this was patch 2.13, so I downloaded and installed it. No problems were reported: it does not seem to have affected my current game.
Note that I do not, as yet, have BtS installed.
Conclusion: this patch is for Warlords, not for BtS.

Oh, I didn't know that (don't have the game yet). Are they going to fix that?

If you patch the game while having Warlords installed, you patch Warlords.
If you patch the game while having BTS installed, you patch BTS.
If you patch Civ4 without addons, you patch Civ4.

There's a patch for each version out. Easy as pie.

This bug/oversight is so game-breaking that it really does not speak well of Firaxis programmers.

BTS won't be released for 2 days and there's already a patch?

Because there's about a month to work on bug fixes while the game is being mass produced on CDs.
