How do I add new resources by reskinning existing models?

The only tutorial that I've found is here. But the tutorial does not provide a clear method of switching out textures using existing models as a template.

In that tutorial, the spice resource is copied and transformed into a lemon resource. The trouble is that .dds textures can't be reassigned without using a hex editor. (If I understand the tutorial correctly.)

I tired to load the .nif files in SceneViewer and NifScope but I can't figure out how to switch out texture name references. I tried loading the .nif into 3ds Max 2009 using the latest NifTools plug-in but when I tried to edit the texture the program crashes.

I'm at my wit's end. I can easily do everything else except edit textures.

Help!

(open the nif in nifscope -> select the mesh -texture property - exchange name)

but perhaps it would be easier to make a copy of the files in a new folder and save the new texture under the old name

edit: saying this without reading the tutorial you refered ...

How do you do that?

When I right-click on a mesh, I see two options under Texture: Edit UV and Export Template. How do I see texture properties in NifScope?

EDIT: Nevermind for now. When I first launched NifScope, the Block list's Name column was too narrow and I couldn't see the NiTexturingProperty.

Thanks for the help, Coyote! I'll check in later with an update of my progress.
