If the mods are compatible with each other, then you just download and install them the way you do any mod. Go to the Mods menu, open the Mod Browser, find the mods, click Install. (This assumes that the mods in question are available in the Mod Browser in the first place. Many mods aren't; for those mods, like my own, you download the files and place them in your user directory by hand.)

If the mods aren't compatible with each other, then you'll run into problems as you play. These problems might not manifest themselves right away, and might not cause obvious problems at all. But don't assume that just because it doesn't crash right away that the mods are actually working together correctly.

No, you can't easily tell whether mods are compatible with each other without going into its source code.
No, you can't just assume that because they modify different things that they'll be compatible.
And no, you can't easily tell whether the mods are even compatible with the base game, since many of the things on the mod browser are horribly out-of-date. (You CAN find the mods' threads on this site to see if any updates have been made since the last patch date.)

So basically I'm pretty much screwed

No, just go to the thread for those specific mods, and ask the person who made them. Chances are, that person knows exactly what things the mods alter, and is probably aware of most conflicts. If you can't find a thread for a mod then it's probably out-of-date, but most of them are here.

Do you know a better site for mods

No. This is THE site for Civ5 mods; if it's not here, then it's not anywhere. (And yes, I'm serious.)

if you are comfortable looking at some XML, you might learn that 2 mods work well together but one conflict gives you those errors. So, when i wanted to use Terra Nostra with Ancent Med Civ's, i had to start by deleting one file (the terra nostra carthage conflicted with the anc med carthage).

All i had to do was delete ONE FILE and my problem was fixed, and most "Modular" mods work in this way. Unfortunately, not all mods are modular, so you can't just "delete" a civ's entry from the civilizations.xml file and expect it to work.

Sometimes a mod is out of date, but it doesn't matter. Palace Additions and Government Buildings are both pretty "out of date" as in released a while back without being revised or "supported" but those 2 mods both work - in fact, they work with almost every mod you load with it. ive never seen a thread for palace additions or i would have given kudos and feedback, but its still a fun mod.
