How do you compete in wonders against AI?

As for the other 'good' wonders, aka pyramids, sun tzu, leo and smith: they do the exact same effect when you capture them

Nope. Last game the Koreans built it on the other continent. Even if I could capture it there would be no benefit to me.

Re Sun Tzu: Barracks are so cheap that you should build them in your core anyway.

I typically build nothing but units and the occasional courthouse in the ancient age. Not building barracks saves me some 30 GPT and the shields alone will get me many additional units. When I did OCP I had a barracks in every city but with xoox it is my opinion that I do better without barracks.

Veteran units are 33% stronger than regulars... barracks pay off after three units and are a bonus from then on. Build them.

Everybody has their own opinions but I say that barracks in cities that will build units will pay off in the long run. If your units are more poweful, you need less of them and they will lose less often, making it less likely that your enemies units will get promoted. Less units also saves you cash!

Converting people to your opinions is one way to increase your influence in this forum. Fiercely denying the norm, while still being successful, works too. :)

On standard maps, I typically build 2-3 barracks outside my capital in cities 2, 3 or 4. Later I might build one in the capital. I usually put one barracks somewhere near the combat frontier. I build a few more if I am militaristic. I sell any barracks I come across unless I need them right then for healing. These barracks cities almost exclusively build all my military units. IMHO there is no sense fighting with mere regulars, they are too fragile. A barracks in every city is wasteful. My other cities that dont have a barracks build bombards when not building improvements.
