How do you destroy cities?

A city is only destroyed if you take it when its population is 1.
But each time you win a battle against a city without city walls, its population drops by one. So, if after killing all the defenders the pop is 3, wait for more defenders to show up and kill them, after a while the pop will drop to 1 and you can take it and destroy it.

Great name...do you ever worry that civ2 is really a control mechanism that reaches into the past and that you're directing real armies and changing history? ;)

no, but I can dream...

Playing an MP game @ 11am (LA time) this Friday you interested? It's me,
2 Irish guys and a possible Portugese.:D

Can you destroy a city at will? Or does the population have to drop to 0?
You can destroy a city that you own by building an engineer in a size one city (except in Chieftian, which won't allow you to destroy a size 1 city that way). BTW, Spies/dips can take cites, but a size 1 city will remain after bribe/subvert. In normal gameplay, you cannot have a size 0 city. But a size 0 city is indeed possible, with "help".

Running on a similar theme...
I sent a crusader and a pikemen to take over a barbarian city (Prince) and killed all the defenders which reduced the pop from 4 to 1. So I waitied several turns for the pop to go to two before taking the city...The barbarians never bothered building another defensive unit :).

while on the topic of destroying cities, i have a question. Sometimes when units attack and win, the population goes down by one, if i have a city wall, does that prevent this??

If you mean when the unit attacks a defended city, then yes... walls prevent population loss when any city defender loses a battle.

But.... walls will not prevent pop loss (of one) when a city is captured... the exception is when a spy captures a city (bribe/subvert) of size 1. In this case, the city will not lose a pop (e.g., not be destroyed). The city will remain size one after bibe/subversion :).

okay, now i understand, i should probably build city walls then or the Great wall.

I won't say "never" build the Great Wall, but at higher difficulty levels on larger maps, it is rarely possible to build everything, esp. at the same time. You'll need to make choices... and as for me personally, I very rarely build the Great Wall anymore, unless it is late game when I just want the 20 points for an expired wonder.

With fast science, the great wall expires quick. Plus, it gets in the way of a wartime Republic/Democracy.... because of the mandatory offers of peace.

If a certain city really needs walls, I'll buy them... but I can't remember the last time i really "had" to do even that. My roads, dips, and aggressive defenders pretty much keep everything at bay, except for the odd sea barb that dumps a bunch of crap ashore right next to a city... that's when I use the roads and fast movers to come in and roast a barb or two.... if any barbs are uncovered (unstacked), they are bribed with my dips.

So.... I skip walls and the GW, and concentrate on things like marketplaces and Colossus + Copernicus instead. ;)

to destroy a city of your own on chieftain, take all the food away from the city possible (the only one you cant is the ciy's square) and use an engineer to change the terrain of the city's square to forest, it will have one hunger at the size of one. The only problem is if the forest has pheasant :viking:

I'm pretty sure you can destroy your own cities at all difficulty levels.

Right now, in a king level game, I'm razing some non-strategic captured French cities by converting all of the population to taxmen. (It also works w/ entertainers and scientists, or any combination of the three types.) On a size 8 city, I'll generate minus six or seven or so food per turn. Once I clear out the food box, pop will drop by one per turn. At the same time, I'll build an engineer. When the pop hits one, I'll rush buy the engineer. That will disband a city, plus give you an engineer that has no home city.

Don't forget to sell off any city improvements as you go. That will net you a few hundred gold.
