I found it interesting that I tried removing roads that another Civ built (in unclaimed territory) and the option to remove was not available.... Had to send in a combat unit to pillage the road.
It was only after I expanded into the territory that I first had to fix the road then delete the road.

The tl;dr version is that a trade route's income is primarily based on the population of the capital and the population of the city connected to the capital.
If connecting a city to the capital runs your civ's budget into a deficit, concentrate on growing both the capital and the city connected to the capital.
A simplified version to follow would be that you'll be running a deficit unless the road is less tiles than the population of the city you're connecting. I think.
