How does one delete unwanted roads in civilization 5: God's and Kings?

I found it interesting that I tried removing roads that another Civ built (in unclaimed territory) and the option to remove was not available.... Had to send in a combat unit to pillage the road.

It was only after I expanded into the territory that I first had to fix the road then delete the road.

It's the same with your own roads outside your territory. You can only pillage them, you can't remove them.

another good question is "when" to build roads.. I built roads connectiong 4 cities and ended up having a deficit -_-

That's not a simple clear cut answer for that question, since roads now cost gold to maintain.

Have you seen the trade route profit formula here on the CivFanatic fora?

If not, here's a detailed explanation: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=438745

The tl;dr version is that a trade route's income is primarily based on the population of the capital and the population of the city connected to the capital.

If connecting a city to the capital runs your civ's budget into a deficit, concentrate on growing both the capital and the city connected to the capital.

yeah I thought it would be something complex too hard for me to understand at 9:20pm hahaha, thanks for the link though will look at it in morning :P

A simplified version to follow would be that you'll be running a deficit unless the road is less tiles than the population of the city you're connecting. I think.
