Reasons:
The 16 MB ATI is ok...but for serious gaming you want at least 32 MB on the video. And of course....it has a P4. So instant thumbs down!!

The TB Santa Cruz is a good card...when it working right. Software tends to crap out a lot. It has no CD-Burner, but the rest is ok.

P4 is made in Intel. That's the problem. They managed to make a chip that's both more expensive and less efficient that Athlon Thunderbird. A 2 Ghz P4 chip is merely as fast as 1.4Ghz Athlon.
Ok, it's still slightly faster for some 3d apps or games but the price doesn't match at all. You'd better go for an AMD chip and then use the saved money to change anything else. An ATI Radeon is recommended if you wanna play and watch video (coz ATI chips have 100% hard Mpeg decompression) or even one of the new Philips sound card. They're excellent and quite cheap. If you can find them of course. Few retailers have them.
Oh and go for a DVD rather than a CD rom.
Concerning the Ram, just hope that's DDR @2600.
Now I can't tell how much is a canadian dollar so...

PS: there are also Apple Ti laptop that rock But for another budget range

ok..no I am done with mac.I'll keep my g3 but thats it.AND keep it on 8.5.1

Canadian dollar is about .65 cents to 1 US dollar.That price includes shipping AND taxes(7%pst and 7% gst for 14%).Its a Dell.

I can always add to and/or upgrade later.They wanted an extra couple hundred for a combo cd/dvd or a dvd or cd write.I'll buy that locally I think.

At any rate this will be a big step up for me from my 8mb rage card and my 300mhz processor.I have no sound ability to speak of with my g3...not even a set of speakers

Its been a nice run Macintosh...I just can't fight the current any longer

Back to you Smash, once again, no need to waste/invest (tick the right one ) in a P4 structure, because it will be obsolete anyway. They (Intel) already planned a new socket format for the Itanium. Ok you'll say it's the same thing for AMD and you'll be right. But at least it's cheaper. And not in a proprietary format.
Concerning prices, here in France, an equivalent P4 with a TFT flat 15"screen is sold @ 8000 french francs, i.e. $1300 (USD). No comment. And the same config with a 1.5Ghz Thunderbird, $1100.
I wonder how AMD will call their next generation, aka Hammer. Maybe Thunderfall

Pff, all those Pentium bashing. That P4 will still be up and running in 3 years, who cares if a "newer, faster, better" model comes out in 6 months. That way you can wait forever, 'cause guess what ? Once that "newer faster better" model comes out, another "newer faster better" model will come out in six months !
I'd say : buy the thing.

Just forget about that 16 mb graphic card and take a 32 one, that's all. And while you're at it, take a second 256 MB memory thingy, it does wonders !

While I agree that a P4 is nothing to snear about, I'd suggest saving the bucks and going with an Athlon (they are just as fast).

Pfff, everybody's obsessed with GF2 MX. Really. It stinks. If you can afford a GF2 (ti or normal) it's better. Or even a GF3. But avoid the MX. I'd prefer the Radeon instead. It's much better, and principally more versatile (so many mpeg hardware coded features). Now the R200 new radeon can even beat the GeForce3, for a lower price so...
Oh and I forgot something. Why not a KyroII (3Dprophet 4500), that's not that expensive and is superior to a geforce 2 GTS. The world is crazy. Especially horses.. uh yeah, Crazy Horses, Moulin Rouge, etc. . Hem sorry this joke was bad.

Hey Smash, just FYI. Since ICQ sucks than all other IM (included MSN) together, it's normal that you can't have your contact list from your Mac on your new PC. That's why (and I did that twice) I had to ask authorization to add people twice. Each time for Mc ICQ, the other one for the PC version. Annoying. Whereas using Yahoo or MSN, your list is stored online, so is platform independent...
