How large can a city be and what was your limit!

Mine was Mecca. It has a size of 32 had a U shape river around it surrounded by floodplains and grassland. I also had two merchant super specialists that gave it two extra toasts. i will post a screenie asap. unhelath was a huge problem and limited the population most of the game.

With ideal location, I think the maximum size a city can be is 61: that would be a city with 20 grassland/pigs tiles in its fat cross, generating 122 food (20x 6 food + 2) thus 61 pop.

And you can temporarily get to 62 after building the Hanging Gardens :)

1) I am sure the maximum number of bonus resources in a city I got is 4. Except you go to the worldbuilder, of course.

2) I seriously doubt you can get enough health to make it work

1) I don't know in which type of world you play but cities with 5-6 resources happen in every of my games. I've seen cities with up to 9 resources. Try starting a non-custom game and reveal the whole map with the worldbuilder. You'll see some good spots.

2) Read PsyRinge's reply :)

Won't the concentration and general number of resources in any potential city radius vary directly with the difficulty level? I haven't encountered any maps that would accomodate a city with 5-6 resources, but I jump on the opportunity to have one with even 2 resources on the Noble maps I play on. Maybe I just always get shafted with the start locations??

I believe there is an error in the calculation. I didn't use any mods. I have tried to create the biggest city possible by making every single tile with flood plain, river and wheat. Currently, it's at 75 and still growing.

Each of the tile has 10 food (don't ask me why, I didn't mod). That will give us a potential city size of 10 x 20 + 5 x 1 = 102. That is not counting adding Great Merchant super specialist (which adds one food to your city).

Having said that, health is a major issue that will eat away some of the food. Unhealthiness is at a whopping -77 vs health at 42 for my game. Hence, 35 food are eating away giving a possible city size of

205-35 = 170/2 = 85

We need more health inducing techs, people, buildings and wonders ;)

Well as someone pointed out, there are Future Techs for health
and with Merchant SS, that meant there is no theoretical limit on the sustainable population of a city....it just would take nearly forever to get there.

With Future Tech, you can practically get unlimited health.

Quite true.

In a game I was playing with a couple of days ago trying to max future tech just to see the effects, I had many cities where the health was over 100.

How many tiles is the maximum width and heigth of a city? I've got a city with 6 population and cultural border is much larger than the land areas I can occupy (5 tiles wide/high atm). Does this size ever expand or is that the maximum size it can obtain? Answers very much appreciated! :)

I believe culture will keep on expanding forever. Now it terms of tiles a city can use, it can use 20 around it I think.

Worldbuilder lets you set the city size upto 1000. Getting the future techs and Great Merchants to increase it to 1001 would have taken a long time since it needed almost 3000 units to stagnant and then 2000 more to grow.
Culture borders don't grow any farther once you reach legendary culture for that city.

I think 1000 or 1001 cannot be displayed in the star (in case of capital city) or circle (incase of every other city)...
