Capturing the Image

This guide starts out assuming you want to capture an image from your screen and post it in the forums.

First, you need to capture the image you want. If you have an image that is already done, skip ahead to the next Section.

There are many programs to choose from to do this.

I happen to use Screen Hunter. It is a small free program that also allows you to capture just a portion of the screen instead of the entire thing. The images can also be saved in various formats. It allows quite a bit of customization for a small free program.

Screen Hunter .zip File (317k)

Screen Hunter .ace File (316k)

Whichever program you do choose, capture your image and do any editing to it that is needed.

Ideally, you should upload your iamge to the Civ Fanatics Server rather than attaching it directly to your post.

By uploading, you can add more than one image to your post, you can pick where in your post the image will appear, and your file can be larger than if you had attached it.

At the bottom of every page in the forums is a link to upload your image.

Please be sure to notice the limitations on your Upload.

UploadB.jpg

Add your file to the list by selecting the 'Browse' button. Find and select yor file to upload. You may upload three files per 'session', but may have any number of 'sessions' running at once.

Once your file is uploaded, you will get a confirmation Message that has a sample link for your image.

You can highlight and copy this link for use in adding the image to your post. Just remember to change the end of the link to your actual file.

Now that your file is uploaded to the Civ Fanatics File Server, you can add it to your post.

There are two main ways to do this. You can add it as an image or as a link. Doing it as an image makes the picture be 'imbedded' in your post and will load each time anyone views the post. Doing it as a link makes the reader click on the link to see the image.

An Example of an 'Image' post:

An Example of a 'link' post:

The coding to do either of these ways are very similar. Here is the coding for both of the methods above:

Where ever the line is placed for the images is where it will appear in the post.

More Information on Coding for images can be found in the FAQ here and [here.

Alternative for taking screenshots:
You don't need a screenshot program to take screenshots!
The way I do it is just pushing the "Print screen" key at the moment I want to capture the screen. I open Paint (comes with Windows) and push the Shift and Insert key simultaniously.
The screen will appear in the window and you can fool around with it and at the end save it.

Using the Upload facility, I have found it extremely important to be sure the file name is all lower case on my system, before I even upload it. Then, everything works as documented.

Like Civ1, I use Alt-PrtSc from Civ2 to save the image. Then Windows Accessories Paint, CtrlV to grab the image. When a unit is blinking, it may not show, so I AltTab to do it all over again.

The I usually save first, the bmp file. I generally cut the image from the Civ menu border, then File New and CtrlV paste again to reduce the image size. I always SaveAs jpg, since the quality is good and the jpg file is Much Smaller.

What's the difference between pressing printscreen only and alt-printscreen? And what's the difference between Shift-Insert and CtrlV? Is there any difference or just two ways to do the same thing?

I think it depends on your OS and Keyboard and such. I just rechecked my notes, and for Win98, AltPrtSc is what works for me. Of course, there is also ShiftPrtSc, CtrlPrtSc, ShiftAlt etc. Something should work!

When IBM planned the PrtSc key, the F1 Help key and such, they defined simplicity. Than along came Bill Gates!
