How to make an army

I have been playing Civ3 for a few weeks now but I have not yet figured out how to make an army.

I get a leader once in a while but what is exactly the keystroke sequence to use that leader to make the army? I put all the military units I wish to form the army in one stack with the leader and keep pressing 'B' but nothing happens, not even an error message

You need to turn the leader into an army which is done in a city. There is an icon in the lower-middle that peroforms this function - once in a city. Then, you can load units. I recommend loading identical units. If you load 2 cavalry and a rifleman, your army will have the movement rate of the rifleman = 1.
