How to trade resources?

Do you have to have an embassy if you want to trade resources? When I tries to get iron from other civs on the trade screen, I get the message that i don't have any connections or something like that, but I have an harbour in my capitol and the other civs must have atleast one harbour in one of it's costal cities... What is wrong?

the harbor of the other civ´s-coastal cities might not be 'roaded' to their capital.

not that i know of, but it will absolutely give you more info about the other civ, so you can bargain for a better deal!

There are a few other things as well, the harbor doesn't work over ocean squares, just coast and sea until you discover navigation. Also there has to be a path between your harbor and the opponent harbor and you must have explored it once or traded maps.
