Apparently the 24H2 update to Windows 11 causes an existing bug (reading an uninitialized address) in Alien Crossfire to crash the game at a new game start, and every time it saves.
The programming Youtuber Nathan Briggs had investigated the bug, and reported a fix to GOG.
