Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the hwacha's arrows propelled by gunpowder? In the game they come with construction and well before gunpowder. I understand that it's just a game, it's not supposed to be realistic it's there for balance etc. but what could be powering them in the game? Compressed air? Sid's almighty guidance? Perhaps steam power(the Koreans had semi-ironclads by the time of the first Japanese invasion; they are great techers after all, Wang being financial with his seowons and everything)

Yeah, that one is not very realistic. In my mod I've got a Culverin (str 8) at Gunpowder - it should probably be a unique replacement for that unit except I don't think it should be able to ignore city walls like other gunpowder units.

They are powered by CHEESE!, god of all Hwachas.

Seriously, I would like a seige unit more advanced than Trebs but before steel. The Ottomans under Mehmet didn't have Steel, but their cannons are famous for winning Constantinople. Perhaps at Gunpowder?

These are some explanations for the issues you're discussing:

Hwachas are the Korean siege unit because it allows the players to use a gunpowder-like unit much before gunpowder became widely used (Gunpowder dates before 1000 AD, its widespread use didn't come until the Age of Discovery (ca. 1500 AD).

As for the cannons, I'd say they should be like in LoR--there's the bombard (an early cannon--requires gunpowder & either copper or iron); & then there's the cannon we already use (at steel).

That's actually not a bad idea. I'm using a Culverin as well.

Do a search in the Creation & Customization forum for Culverin. There's a nice one in there somewhere. When it you see it in the game you'd swear it was added by Firaxis, very well done. There's a button available for it too, though not with the unit itself. I found one in a cbutton compilation pack and there's a link to it in the thread.

I have the Culverin at Gunpowder (patterned after Gustavus Adolphus' use of field artillery). They're 8 strength, +25% vs City (10% bombard) and require Copper or Iron. Per wikipedia, the Hwacha were actually in use about the same time so I have them replace the Culverin instead. I kept them the same as the Culverin but gave them immunity to First Strike (to counter Samurai which they are famous for having done) and +25% vs Melee. Since they occur later now the melee bonus isn't as useful so I decided on First Strike Immunity. They probably shouldn't be that strong against cities but for balance purposes I just made them as superior Culverins. Also increased Gunpowder cost from 1200 to 2000.
