Ahh, it makes sense now (sort of, heh-heh). Much obliged sampsa and AcaMetis for your replies. Lain does some things so quickly it's not always easy to follow. At any rate I finally realize it's largely about failgold for research, although he did complete Mids and GL for more easily understandable reasons. The way he uses Science Specialists and Cottage Economy to beeline Optics and Astro is truly amazing. Gotta try some of that in my own games. Cheers and thanks again for your expert analysis.

Hi, Here is my advice:

1st: You can put Research into a tech, and then trade One to One.
2nd: You can check the Tech-screen every turn and trade faster than the AI.

I enabled "No Tech Brokering" a long time ago, because I was tired of gifting a military tech to an ally and having them swap it to everyone. Or having to do all my monopoly tech trades/sales in the same turn, to avoid the recipient AI trading the tech in question to everyone else before my next turn.
One thing I have noticed about No Tech Brokering is that it is verry tempting, when I see a neutral AI researching a military tech, to gift it to them so they can't trade it to my enemies.
