I can't get C3C to run!!!!

Ok, so I've been playing C3C 1.22 for quite some time now with no problems at all. Since about a week ago I tried booting C3C up to start a new game and it won't run.
To be a bit more specific, it DOES run. Sort of. My cursor will hourglass to indicate that something is happening but then nothing. If I alt+ctrl+delete and click on the processes tab I can see that civconquests.exe is running. If I click to run C3C again the same thing happens except there will be two instances of civconquests.exe running.. and so on. I can't alt+tab to it since it does not appear in the applications tab.
I've tried repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling. I've deleted all files and reinstalled. It seems to be specific to C3C, patched or unpatched. I can get vanilla civ working just fine, no problem.
I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed in another thread. I've looked briefly but can only find the 'insert CD' problem.
I will donate limbs, vital organs etc etc to anyone that can help me. Thanks.

Did you just change monitors or video cards? You might have a refresh rate problem.

Try adding the line Refresh=xx where xx is your monitors refresh rate to your conquets.ini file. To find the refresh rate, right click on the desktop and select Properties. Click on the Settings Tab, and then click on Advanced. Then find the Monitor tab on the new window. It should give you a list of your refresh rates in a drop down box.

When you load the game and the screen goes black, can you still hear the sound?

Well that's the thing, the screen doesn't go black. The only indication that anything at all is going on is that my cursor momentarily changes to the hourglass and there is an entry in the processes tab. That's it, no black screen, no sound, no nothing.

Do you have any virtual CD programs running? And some system specs would be helpful.
