Yes the AI is very dumb. Imagine that the so called most powerful military nation still has 50 spearmen and a few stone axe and bearskin units running around in 1953.
OMG -- what the? What's that warrior doing defending one of MY cities!?
Just kidding. I should probably disband about 50 cavalry, but I still find them useful in a pinch. Like when I'm rushing to complete a wonder they're worth 20 shields each! Or when I start building modern armor, I'll drop one for one.
Trinity: I love to brin in stacked Cavalry to follow my Modern Armour. They are 'cheap' (i.e. I already have them), they make good garrisons, and they can be surprisingly good at countering AI Infatry invasions (I always try to make sure the AI can't build mech inf ). The trick is not to defend (even if you attack the AI wqhen they come in) but to throw huge numbers of cheap units into their territory.....
btw: just encountered one of the stupidest things I've ever seen: There is 1 iron on the continent, and two civs. The iron is like 15 tiles from the AI captial, 30 from mine. I send a settler there even though it is hopeless. The AI has a settler there before mine arrives - and the guy marches on!!!!!!!!! The iron is mine!!!! Can you belive that????? (Can post sav, too!)
