I hate my lif-uh game

I'm playing emperor and going for a conquest win, following the steps of the 'perfect strategy'. I've set my science and entertainment to zero, struggling for peace (losing all my gold), and I have -1 gold per turn. Should I give up, or is there some trick/strategy I could use?

Improving Your Opening Play Sequences

and then try playing a basic game on Regent level up until 1000BC. Once you play a game up to 1000BC on Regent then post a description of that game and ask for comments or criticism.

There can be 20 or 30 things you are doing wrong but it sounds like you have too few cities to support whatever excuse for a strategy you may be following and it does not appear that you have a handle on how to use your workers and develop your empire properly.
