I used to play exclusively regent and found I can dominate the game just as easily at monarch.
I however really hate to MM my cities unless I only have a few. I really dislike it during the late middle ages and industrial ages when i have tons of cities and already conquered a civ or 2.
I also am in love with communism and research it as soon as possible in the industrial age.
I do not use CxxC but a combination of CxxxC and CxxxxC. I really dislike the idea of CxxC and hope i don't have to play that way to win on emperor.
Can I keep up with the rest of the AI in research with a large empire on emperor and how is it that much different from monarch? If i can dominate monarch without much MM, would I be able to do the same on emperor?

which is mostly up to the size of the map since I am a builder and smaller maps require a lot of wars that I have no idea how to wage early without my powerhouse economy to back me up. 
Biggest things you will notice is happiness, the AI will out research you at first, and that they have a lot of troops and can replenish there numbers quickly, corruption is worse...oh and you can't build all the wonders like on Monarch
