Hey I'm new at this game and need help in a lot of area's so I can finally do decent on....chietain..

1. How Can I get more of an income of gold.

2. How Can I get cities that aren't growing to grow.

3. How could I beable to get a very large army like I see in some of these screenshots on this site.

- If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it. I really want to get good at this game.

1. How Can I get more of an income of gold.
This is where micromanagement comes in.
Every single tile has its own values. For example, grassland is 2 food, desert is 1 shield, etc. Food is how fast it grows, shield is how fast it builds, and commerce is how much money that city makes for your treasury.
What you want to do is to tweak every single city the way you want it...most likely checking on each one every single turn. If you are building a Great Wonder, try moving around all your guys so that they are working on the tiles that give the most shield. If you are running a deficet, do the same for commerce.
Also, beware of corruption. The further away from your nearest Palace, Capital or Forbidden Palace (in general, but not to be technical), the more commerce you loose, and the less money you gain per city. Also, on Despotism, if you get more than 2 food, then it is subtracted one. For example, if you are on grassland and you irrigate it so that it produces 3 food, then if you are on Despotism, 3-1=2, so you still only gain 2 food because of production.
Sometimes, if there are more unhappy citizens than happy citizens (content citizens don't matter), then you will most likely need an entertainer or an increase in the luxury slider to keep them from going into disorder (no production, commerce, or growth). To do this, just click on one of your laborer's worked tiles and they will disappear and turn into an entertainer (or a scientist or a tax collector - you choose). However, this gives you less laborers to work the tiles.
If you don't want to micromanage that way, then use the Governor. Right-click on a city, and then select "Contact Governor". Then set your options - do you want your laborers to automatically go for the shields, foods, or commerce?

Also, if you press F1 or F2 (forgot) or F3, there will be two little sliders at the top. One is the science research. The higher this is, the faster you research. The other is the luxury slider. The higher it is, the more money is devoted to keeping your citizens happy (you don't need to touch this in chieftan - disorder doesn't come very often if you micromanage correctly).

2. How Can I get cities that aren't growing to grow.
Either contact the governor or micromanage yourself, moving around all the laborers so that they work on the tiles that will provide the most food. Also, cities cannot exceed Size 6 unless they are next to a river or have an aqueduct built in them. Cities cannot exceed size 12 unless they have a hospital (available in Industrial Ages).
If your tiles just aren't giving enough food no matter how you twist them, then irrigate the tiles. Unless you have Electricity, you cannot irrigate unless there is fresh water (a river or a lake) nearby. So, if you want to irrigate in the middle of the desert, you have to make a long irrigation chain from the nearest freshwater source.
Tundra cannot be irrigated. Only mined. Mines produce more production (shield) when worked, and can be built on any land terrain except for Flood Plains.

3. How could I beable to get a very large army like I see in some of these screenshots on this site.
To get an "Army", you have to win a battle with an Elite (using a Land Unit). There is a 1/16 chance of you getting a Military Great Leader. Then, move him to the nearest city and create an army there.
If you are talking about lots of forces, just build, build, build!

Also, tips for a newbie - expand expand expand. New cities are your most valuable assets up to mid-Ancient Era.

read every article you can find in the waracacemy. Also read some game reports of games on higher difficulties (deity / sid).

After reading and taking to heart all that informotion, you *should* be able to win deity :D.

You make it sound so easy. Just read a few articles, skim a couple games, and start laying the smack down.

Unfortunately, I don't think many people will be able to follow the path to deity that easily. ;)

1 - Build more markets, banks, harbors (you get an extra food in the water, and water has good commerce) and make sure your laborers (double click the city) are working on roads. To move them, click on a 'laborer' (food/shield/commerce icon), and click on the tile you want to use. Also, don't build every improvement, and watch how many troops you have. Build more cities too. Build your cities tighter (you only need 12 tiles for 2/3 of the game). That means more cities, and more commerce.

2 - Build a city in the desert or tundra. :p j/k! I think you meant to ask how to make cities grow?

First - Never irragate grassland in despotism, it only gives 2 food. (exceptions are wheat, cattle, wines, and game. Irragating wines on plains has no effect).

Second - Your city can only grow to size 6 before aquaducts, and size 12 before hospitals, which is why you should build tighter.

Third - Look at your surroundings. If you have lots of hills, or mountains, you need more irragation. (This is a more advanced tactic, and is only used outside of despotism, unless you have lots of food around). Basically:

1 irragated grassland for 1 hill (2 hills with rails).
2 irragated grassland for 1 mountain/mined desert (2 mountains/mined desert with rails)

3 - Build LOTS of cities (tightly), and don't build so many improvements. Larger maps also help.

I especially recommend Cracker's article on opening plays!

You must irrigate/mine your land (rule of thumb: Irrigate Brown, Mine Green) and build roads to get various benefits, you MUST also learn what shields/gold/food terrain types give you - then you will know what is best to work on first. No point in mining a mountain if you can mine a grassland with cattle before!

If your cities are not growing: At size 6 you will need an Aqueduct, or they must be near a river, otherwise they will not grow.

Smart City placement makes for strong growth, a prospering economy and ensures final victory. Well, it should... :)

Each citizen (the population of your city) must eat two food per turn. Any excess is put into the food storage box every turn. Once the food sotrage box is full, all the food is used, the box empties, and it gains a citizen. If you have exactly twice the number of food than citizens, then no food can be stored and your city doesn't grow. If you have less than twice the amount of food than citizens, then it will start to take food out of the storage box every turn. For example, your city is size 4 and you have 7 food, it will take 1 food out every turn. Once all the food from the storage box in this way is used up your city starves and loses 1 citizen. However, if it is impossible to get your city to grow for irrigation (even through irrigation chains), then you must wait for electricity. If your city is on the shore of an ocean, then you can build a harbor, which gives every coast and sea tile two food instead of one. Hope this helps. :)
