In Beyond the Sword does anybody know when a city flips to a new civ and what the factors are? I know it's got something to do with culture and population distribution but beyond that I don't know. i.e. How do I defend against it? or How do I make it happen?

you've got to be REALLY overwhelming their culture with yours......propaganda and wonders help a LOT.

Usually on the second culture related revolt for that town.

Defend against it by stationing more troops in your culturally threatened city.

The mouse-over tooltip for the culture bar on the city screen shows the chance of revolt.

If you've just captured a city build culture until the first border pop, then build culture buildings. If your going to have to make peace rather than wipe out your opponent plan ahead and raze any cities nearby that might cause a culture flip. If their capital is nearby try to capture or raze it. Strategically spread culture creating corporations if possible.

If your territory is being encroached by culture from an other civ and you can't/don't want to go to war, and are unable to build any more culture buildings etc, try increasing your main culture rate. I usually maintain it at 10% once I'm ahead in tech. If needs must then use a Great Artists to culture bomb vulnerable cities, though I would only do this as a last resort.

Station more troops as stated above.

Thanks for the tips but it doesn't really answer my question. I guess the one about the 2nd culture revolt is the closest.

Does adding more troops really prevent it? Or only under certain civics. That would be good information to know...

A little background. Me an another human are adjacent to each other and are fighting AIs separately. Not ready to go to war with him yet. We both have culture at 10% but he is sucking up my land and has taken half my a city's land and now it has 60% of his population. Revolt % is about 5%.

I've built every cuture improvement. Short of GP culture popping the city I've done everything I know. Since my last posting I lost the city to him. Very disturbed about it.

I want to know two things:
1. How to prevent it
2. How to predict it so if I know it's a lost cause I can self-destruct the city before he gets it. i.e. Use population to build units, pillage towns, etc.

Culture, culture, culture. Hermitage will give a city +50% culture, as well as any of the buildings that are unlocked after building enough temples (cant think of there name right now, bah). Run some artist specialists in the city. And lastly, garrison a lot of troops there. If you mouseover a city and the border civilization has more than 50% culture in your city than you are in trouble. Sometimes in my city that is furthest away I will settle a great artist for +12 culture, this will pretty much guarentee that this city will stay yours and gain land.

The civic you run doesn't matter. If you have enough troops to prevent a culture flip your units will incur damage and wake up rather than you losing the city.

Press Alt-F1, if you can "liberate" any of the cities to your rivals then you should look at the troops levels you have there. If another civs culture is encroaching in to your city's fat cross it ain't a good sign. The only way to beat culture flipping is to have a stronger culture than your rivals. He probably has a city nearby (not even on the border) that is packed full of wonders, GPs, Temples, Cathedrals etc.
