I have played a number of game now and my score seems to be going nowhere! Someone help with some major ideas for earning points or score!

Move up a level. Difficulty level has a significant influence on score (but don't think that a higher score necessarily means a game better-played).

Three things are used to calculate your score for a given turn
1. Territory
2. Happy people
3. Content people and specialists

The final score is comprised of the average score per turn added with the finishing bonus.

The finishing bonus is calculated by multiplying the number of turns remaining with the difficulty level (1=chieftain, 6=deity).

To maximise your score you have one of two options.
1. Very early victories
2. Delaying victory for "milking" purposes.

The first part of the "milking" process involves maximising your score per turn by expanding until the domination limit (without exceeding it), maximising the population and maximising population happyness.
The second part consists of the process of delaying the victory as much as possible (until 2050) in order to increase the weight of the larger score per turn achieved at the previous step.

Unlike Civ2 where your score is calculated at the end, this doesnt help much. In Civ3 your score is averaged over the whole game. To get a high score needs you to have as large an area as possible and as many happy people as possible AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

This is why the top scorers in GOTM are some of the best players too - you need to establish a position just short of domination as early as possible then maximise your happy population. This is generally known as milking.

Read Sir Pleb's article in the Strategy Articles forum titled "Maximizing your Score".

Basically, if you play tiny or small maps, you want an early conquest/domination victory (0-1000 A.D. or earlier). Standard maps is kind of a toss-up, but it's usually better to milk. Large and Huge maps milk the game until 2050 A.D.

Dont' worry too much about score because score doesn't take into account improvements, wonders, great leaders, diplomacy, etc. It only counts territory (map size will affect this) and happy/content people (also affected by map size) and the finish bonus which is only dependant on what year you win (killing the world with knights will always get you more 'bonus points' than a spaceship, diplomatic, or culture victory.
