Install Issue

Hi, I figured this was the appropriate place to put this, so here goes:

After having downloaded ROM 2.92, unzipping it to the BTS/mods folder under "My Programs", installing AND 1.74, patch 1.74E, and trying to load the mod, I got a set of flickering lights and then an error message: "failed to initialize renderer"

After getting the error message the first time I got rid of the mod, unzipped it again, and then tried loading ROM 2.92, which worked fine. Then I installed AND 1.74 (recommended settings), which created the same error message. I also tried other things such as AND full install with patch and AND recommended install with patch, yet nothing has worked so far.

I fear it has something to do with my graphics card being unable to handle the graphics (for whatever reason) of AND 1.74. I have not tried updating my card to a newer driver (since its an old card and I doubt there even exists a better driver), but I may give it a shot if there are no other possible solutions. Here's my system info:

Windows XP SP3
Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.80 GHz
1.00 GB RAM
graphics card: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Family
DirectX 9.0c

I have had no problems with this graphics card + driver with any other game modded or unmodded. Like I said it worked for ROM 2.92 (and 2.91). I also followed the install instructions, so I doubt I missed anything there.

I really appreciate any help or insight you guys can give me!

It's likely your computer unable to handle the spec's. AND is a very computer-intense mod; and seeing how your graphics is running for $9.99, new, it's likely the cause.

Also, the GameByro engine seems to have issues with ATI cards in general. Searching google for your error message yielded results from Civ4 forums, as well as Fallout3 forums and Oblivion forums. Guess what they have in common? They all use the same game engine! ;)

Fortunately, Graphics cards are cheaper than ever today; you could likely pick up a Geforce 7 series on Ebay for 20-30 bucks, and play just fine. Otherwise, wait until Civ5, or your new computer, whichever comes first. ;)

Hmm, that's what I worried. I know my computer is old, but still... :P

That's an interesting observation though; I did google the error message but from most of the forum posts it looked like the problem had been solved by game patches. Anyways thanks for your help! I guess it'll have to wait for the new computer then
