Install problem

i need help. i have a beige G3, running OS 9.2.2, plenty of memory, and have just burnt a copy of Civ 3 from my friend. (yes, i am aware of the moral problem that stems from this, but i just got my burner working and was celebrating. i'll buy the game in a few days.) anyways, i can open the install utility, but when i hit "agree" on the liscense agreement, it prepares for a second, then gives me an error of type 1. this has hapened more times than i can count so far, and there is literally NOTHING out there to help me troubleshoot on a mac. if this is some disc protection thing, then for christ's sake, they could've TOLD me!

welp, that's it, if anyone has heard of this and/or knows how to fix it, help!:(

Well, we are certainly not about to help you pirate Civ3. You're on your own.

okay, peraps this is a little to deep for you, mr beam. I (being me) used my neat piece of hardware that i got to work after months of troubleshooting. i now wish to know wether or not a problem i'm habving with the install is because i burnt the game.

now, here's the tricky part... if it IS because i burnt or "pirated" the game, i will BUY THE GAME! see.. since there is no demo, and i do not have an unlimited supply of funds, i want to be sure i can even install this on my computer, much less enjoy it.

so, while your zeal is admirable, and mac pirating is a terrible thing, perhaps you could pay attention next time.

You see, the root problem is that whenever somebody says, "Yeah, I just burnt a copy of this to use for a couple days before I buy the game," what they mean 99.99% of the time is "I pirated this game, and I have no intention at all of ever buying it, but I don't want to admit that." To be perfectly blunt, in all probability you are lying through your teeth.

And there is no reason you can't buy the game, see if a problem occurs, and if it does, talk to tech support and resolve it - or else get your money back. The only way you could find yourself losing on the deal is if (a) you never intended to buy it in the first place or (b) you buy a copy from a disreputable vendor who has no return policy.

heh, i messed up, never meant to post 3 times.

anyways, i thought the point of borrowing a game was to see if you liked it, and i am borrowing. i have used both the burnt disk and the original. if i can get no help here, it seems that actually going through the process of buying, testing, and returning the game would be... the dumbest possible thing i could do. i HAVE the original disk, i'm WILLING to buy the game, what i am not going to do is dick around with buying and returning the game just so that i can have the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with not burning a game.

of course, this is all kind of stupid, all i want to do is play civ 3, if no one here can help, i'll have no choice but to buy a PC, and see if that's easier to get tech support for.

sorry again for the three posts thing, i really messed up there

Remus, you have a well-equipped Mac, but worry that for some inexplicable reason a very popular game like Civ3 may not work on it. It took you months to get your burner working. You clearly have difficulty managing your email, which is why your same message keeps appearing on this thread. You are upset that you weren't explicitly warned about disc protection. You are new here, and asking for help regarding a morally dubious problem to boot, yet dig yourself a deeper hole by reacting like a ten-year-old the moment that someone questions your very questionable ethics.

My question is: why didn't you pirate Pacman instead?

oh, what the hell. i figure that, save selling my burner, this was what it was meant to be used for: borrowing games from my OCD friend without him being afraid that i'd scratch them. thing of it is, i tested this, and it is NOT a disk protection problem, both the normal and burned disks work fine on my friend's G3 iMac. it should, by all accounts work on even my crap machine.

in case it escapes you, this means, in simple terms: problem not burning, burning work fine. no disk protection. yes, i do plan on buying this game if i can play it, and screw you if you don't believe me, that isn't my problem.

So, maybe we could act like making sure all mac users get access is important. if G3's can't play this, many mac users can't. i'm hoping this isn't the case. i'm hoping it can be fixed. all i want is to know if this can be fixed so i can buy the ****ing game. no question of morality, no question of ethics. just technical "why, on a G3 with os 9.2.2, does a great game not work." unless you have something to contribute, no one needs to hear you.

btw, what in god's name makes you think posting on a forum involved me using E-mail? i've never seen any connection. also, i did pirate Pacman, only Pacman is free.

last time i'm posting. great place you got here.

Is your friend's iMac running 9.2.2? If so, then you've answered your own question. According to the system requirements, all it requires is 8.6 or higher, a G3 300MHz or higher, and at least 64MB of RAM. I think it may be the 300 MHz requirement that is hurting you.

I hope that helps a bit.

On a side note, if you're actually going to switch to a PC because a few Mac people defend Mac gaming development by encouraging you to BUY a new game...then I say good riddance. We have no need of trolls on this board.

I, as well as any other Mac person on this board, will be MORE than happy to help you with game problems. As I saw that you are having problems with an actual copy, then it shows there is a problem. I have offered a bit of help.

But, and I pray I am not alone here, with Mac gaming being where it is, we should all be buying multiple copies of these games to show developers that there is a real market for Macs...and then they can start putting out some great games like this one.

Your admission of piracy aside, you haven't provided anything in the way of system specs, so it's difficult to help you further. I don't know what you expect with such a vague description of your problem. More to the point, being one of the programmers on the Mac port, I personally don't have much interest in helping you until you buy a copy.

also, i did pirate Pacman, only Pacman is free.

I can speak definitively on this topic, being the author of the arcade emulator MacMAME - Pac-Man is definitely not free. Namco actively markets it with any number of their arcade game collections, in addition to various licensed sequels published through Infogrames.

I couldn't agree more - if people want 'technical help' when making/using pirated copies of Mac software then you ain't gonna get it here.

Remus, have a chat to your twin brother, Romulus. When you wear that Apple badge on your desktop, there's a bunch of freakin' responsibilities, man. Honour, integrity, anti-warez, planting heaps of forests and bein' careful with yer nukes are all part of the Mac-Civ way.

We are a different breed, and if you can't cut our mustard (Dijon mostly) go back to Gatesville.

However, because we're slightly short of numbers and need to influence MacSoft, we will forgive you -- and embrace you (metaphorically, cyberly) -- if you go out and buy a Civ game with a big X on it. [BTW, I suggest changing your signon -- something funny like 'Remit' would be kewl.]

Hey everybody? Txurce is a Prince! Aspiring to be a :king: I'm sure. ;)

This thread should be our "official-unofficial" SPAM/OT thread, because Remus was definitely "off-topic.":crazyeye:
