Irritating Global Warming!

I've played Civilization 4 off and on for awhile now. I don't have any of the expansion packs. I just started coming on this site and looking at mods and stuff.

One thing that really just annoys the living begeezes out of me is the global warming. You know, like when all your tiles start turning to desert!!

I know it's a result of pollution and stuff but come on...entire areas instantly turning to desert? I just think it's unrealistic and really annoying when you've worked hard to build improvements and then all your people starve to death.

That was one thing that made me stop playing the game for awhile.

I'm wondering...

Are there are mods, utilities, etc. to stop global warming or at least stop your tiles from turning to desert?

Would any of the expansion packs do it? I'm thinking about buying Beyond the Sword and stuff. Thanks.

The lastest patch for BTS has it removing forests from tiles before just desertfying them, which is nice. I agree, it's a feature with potential but is fairly uninspired as is.

Yeah, I hate this global warming mechanic too, very unrealistic and not fun. It's pretty easy to mod completely out, I definitely recommend it. Some instructions here.

You know, people, but global warming is SUPPOSED to be punishing you for not controlling pollution (yours or others').

And it may be not realistic, but it's at least somehow an acceptably logical game implementation of the problem.

Modding it out just remove an entire part of the game (controlling the damage to the environment).

Problem is controlling pollution has nothing to do with stopping global warming. Hospitals, supermarkets, recycling centers, environmentalism... they don't help stop global warming at all. The only thing that does really are forests in 3.17, and good luck having the AI leave enough of those.

The only way to avoid GW is to not build any factories/polluting buildings, and putting yourself at a large disadvantage should the AI not choose to do so as well.

It's a crappy mechanic through and through, not something I feel enhances the game. If it was better implemented (cancelled out by health resources/buildings/civics) and not as bizarre and painful as random deserts (fortunately easy enough to mod) I'd use it.

Ah well, tends to mean that the real problem is they srewed it up in the patch, then.

I suppose a mod is needed to put it back in order, where sensible building management can be used to keep pollution in check.

Global Warming isn't usually a problem for me, but maybe it's because I play on lower difficulties. The only time I really had problems with global warming is when I went completely insane with nukes after much prodding from my friends. That time, I single handily caused Global Warming, and I was proud of it. :P

Well it worked the same way since the beginning... but I suppose in Beyond the Sword they went and made all the late game buildings create a lot more unhealthiness, so that would have made things worse.

They actually removed non-nuke global warming altogether in BtS 3.13, and brought it back in 3.17.
