Not sure which forum to start this thread in but I am now campaigning against the rolleyes smiley. I want to limit YOUR free speech by having this smiley removed from the arsenal.

The rolleyes smiley is obnoxious, offensive, and merely invoking it is flaming the people you roll eyes. Does anyone like to be rolleyed in real life? Would we tolerate a "give you the finger" smiley? I think not.

I am serious when I say the quest for civil society in these forums should start by eliminating the rolleyes - it is the one smiley which targets the opponent rather than expressing an internal emotional state.

Yes, I have been excessively rolleyed...

:crazyeye: :p :mischief:

You are not the first, there is at least one other thread just like this somewhere below. The issue was intensively discussed to be then dismissed by officials.
As seen above, the rolleyes smile is not the only one someone could find offensive.

But they are only smileys!

They are not offensive at all, it´s the interpretation a person makes when seeing them that could feel offensive. So when you feel like it has been abused or you were "flamed" with these smiles, then you should contact a moderator.
But the smiles are innocent, only posters can be guilty.
:D

sultan, your really asking for this. your getting worked up by something as trivial as a smiley and you must calm down, take your pills.

It's effective.

I like it.

I think it will stay.

YOU would

michael bolton's music is more obnoxious than the rolleyes.

Kind of kills your case when YOU still use it Sultan.

:p

I also like it and tend to do it a bit in real life. My absolute least favorite smiley is the puker.

The default rolleyes smily is actually not animated:

Like this default smily better, Sultan? ;)

Yes TF it is considerably less provocative... think about AoA- you couldn't help get a bit miffed when I used it on you above...

I consider the rolleyes to be the "f word" of smilies, I only pull it out during arguments as an absolute last recourse when all hope of rationale debate breaks down. I think being quick on the draw with it creates a hostile environment that much faster.

EDIT: agreed the puking smiley is gross, but the puking title header is the rudest of title headers...

It's just a smilie, Sultan. Eliminating the smilie won't eliminate the attitude.

Just say "no" to restrictions on free smilie speech!

"Is anything more obnoxious than the rolleyes? "

Yes, indeed, but most of them post at Poly.

The rolleyes is my favorite smiley. But Sultan has a point, and I do use it judiciously. I try to use it to indicate that my comment is meant to be interpreted sarcastically, rather than to dismiss another poster's perspective.

But that's just me.

Also, sometimes I may post, "Silly me."

I suppose you don't like these too Sultan?

No, I have no problem with any of these. Only the rolleyes is really insulting without being funny. Nobody uses the aggressive ones in arguments.

Yeah, I do that a lot too. For example, "Theres even someone I know who doesnt even know where England is on the map! " (Which is true by the way :p )
