I am cheap and cannot justify buying an image editor just to mod civ 5 (that is all I would use it for) Is there any how to on creting good images without a software I have ot pay for??
I got GIMP to work...I was saving the dds files with the compression set to "None" and it was distorting all the images...now it's set to DXT1 and it all good.
I agree with CivWarGamer. Also, Paint.NET lets you save as .dds. With Gimp, you need a plug-in and that doesn't work on Windows 64-bit, which most computers seem to have now

I don't know Paint.net, but I have to say GIMP is a great full-featured editor. What it's not good for is just picking it up and using it without taking the time to learn it, understand how it works. It's also not much use if you want to play with it to create simple pictures from scratch (though it's okay if you're an experienced digital artist and know how to use it - or so I'm told).
Same here. GIMP, Win7-64, DDS plugin works just fine. GIMP is the best choice for me for one additional reason: my work computer, which I've used to create a few images, is Linux-based and has GIMP as well.
