is there a way to mod out desert and tundra squares?

When a new map is generated.

So there are no tundra or desert squares in the map?

I use to be that way too... though if you think about it, they really don't screw up your cities unless it's a GP farm. Not all of them are going to hit 20 population and work every tile (not until very late in the game anyway).

Plus, I think with no tundra or desert you miss out on some resources, or maybe will see less of them... and lose variety for trading.

Also, it used to be a grievous sin for me to ever overlap my cities... I strived for the perfect placement of them and would even go to war with civs that settled near me and screwed up my pattern, hehe.

Edit: Sorry for being off topic. I'm sure there are mods out there that take them out for ya. The in-game map gen can either take away tundra or desert, but not both... as you lean more towards colder or warmer weather.

Hehe, I used to be like how Grimus used to be in the past. Now I just try to manage best with whatever is given to me, and that not only improved my game but also made Civ4 much more enjoyable.

Edit: I still do wish the game would allow you to irrigate deserts just like in Civ2 so that they are not completely useless.

I still do not understand why deserts cannot be irrigated like they could in every other civ game.

Yep. It's called being a Romantic. Wanting the most perfect situation and the highest yields possible. I've used the Worldbuilder to play some with that. :)

It definately sharpens your game a lot more to make lemons from lemonade, and use what you've got. It's acutally taken me getting stuck in tundras to understand the value of windmills. Tundras and snow aren't worthless. Well, at least they aren't worthless when they're a hill or adjacent to a river. :)

Because they can't be irrigated in real life perhaps?

Deserts can be irrigated in real life, anything can, it all comes down to the time and cost. This could be reflected in Civ by allowing the irrigation of desert, but taking many turns and providing minimal return.

Farm on a zero-food tile would be what - 1 food tile? As in, still not worth working. Post-biology 2 food tile, so .. not worth working. Only if the tile provided some additional benefit would it be useful. So don't see the benefit in irrigating a desert tile really.
Desert tiles that have resources on them can still be worked, and riverside desert could maybe use a watermill?

You can already do lots with riverside desert, which is better known as flood plain.

Go take a look at the Imperial Valley in California and get back to me. ;)

There is a simple way to change the percentage of desert for each map script but I cannot remember how it is done. I changed it for Continent maps (down to like 10% from 20% or something like that) and it made a big (and very favorable) difference. I would like to do it for Fractal maps so if someone could explain how it would be greatly appreciated. Playing tropical worlds helps some but then you have to cut down a ton of jungle.

Play FFH2 :ar15: you get a unit that changes terrian. Because of that I'm still. play civ4. cannot what till that mod comes out for Warlords

Use SmartMap you can get basically any MapType and Setup you want with it.

Edit: I just had a look at its thread - it does work with warlords - though there are a couple of bugs in it...
For Warlords... I would recommend Planet Generator. It works fine in Warlords, I use it occasionally. However if you want it to be as close to the original maps as possible if you set map to "Cold - No Deserts", turn off flood plains otherwise there would be flood plains plains and flood plains grassland.

FWIW, it won't be coming out for Warlords.

When you play around in the Worldbuilder it becomes clear that the game can handle things like:

1) irrigating or cottage-spamming deserts
2) building cottages in forests - without removing the forest!

etc...

It would be great if these abilites were accessible from within the game, somehow. Perhaps expensive, perhaps slow, perhaps for very little benefit, perhaps restricted to certain civs... but still possible!
