Is there any way to get around the late-game slowdown?

When my game starts getting slow, I save and restart Civ IV. For some reason, this seems to "refresh" the program, and it starts running smoothly again. (No, I am not just imagining things; it really does run better.)

Hmm my slowdowns vanished when i defragged my memory and hard drive too. Strange!! Then again played with so many settings on here but the memory defrag was most recent.

Anyhow, why is it that the actual slowdown happens in late game only? Like, it slows down by a factor of 10.

Whos payin for ur tution?? you have time for Civ4 but not a job??!?!? lol...See I atleast try to get a job, but being that I'm in highschool and only 17, the only places to higher me are Mcdonalds, and Burger King, and, Fast food aint for me, and I just lost 30 pounds, be infront of cheeseburgers n chicken nuggets everyday.. id be a cow...
